UNF defeats cross-town rival 2-1
Final Stats
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team (7-11-1, 6-5 A-Sun) came up with a huge win over cross-town rival Jacksonville on Halloween night, defeating the Dolphins 2-1. The victory gives UNF a 4-1 lead over Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble race for the old wooden barrel.
UNF outshot Jacksonville 12-11, while having an advantage in shots on goal 8-5. Rachael Howard made four saves in the game, while Rebecca Stott made six saves for the Dolphins.
The Lady Ospreys got on the board early, after freshman Kristin Lazowick found the back of the net in the 29th minute. The goal came after Elizabeth Gowan played the ball into the box, where Lazowick was able to put her head on it. The goal is Lazowick's second of the season.
Sophomore Katelin Swift gave the Lady Ospreys a 2-0 advantage in the 57th minute, off another Gowan assist. Gowan played the ball forward, finding Swift wide opened, allowing her to slot the ball past the keeper.
Jacksonville answered back in the 60th minute off a Tamara Cormier goal. Despite Jacksonville's tenacity in the late stages of the game, they were unable to steal the victory away from the Lady Ospreys.
"I am extremely happy with the teams efforts," head coach Linda Hamilton said. "They battled strong for 90 minutes and picked up a huge victory over our bitter rival. They were focused from the start and executed our game plan flawlessly."
UNF has one more game left in the 2007, as they take on Flagler College on Nov. 7 at Hodges Stadium. The game is set for 4 p.m.
