JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The inaugural SunTrust River City Rumble meeting between the University of North Florida men's tennis team and cross-town rival Jacksonville University provided minimal drama on Tuesday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys made quick work of the Dolphins with a 7-0 victory, losing games in only two of the six singles matches and only two total points in doubles. The win improved UNF to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. Jacksonville fell to 0-5 and 0-2 in A-Sun play.
"Our guys did a good job and really took care of business," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "We were very strong in singles, and didn't let up. Right now, I am very happy with how our top guys are playing. They are picking up their level and getting into a rhythm. Our bottom guys are steady, too, but they need to learn to play with pressure on them."
UNF's Eduardo Pereira endured the most challenging match of the day at No. 1 singles, upending JU's Marcos Oliveira, 6-3, 6-4. JU's Clay Garrett won the Dolphins' only other game of the afternoon at No. 2 singles, falling to UNF's Matias Sigal, 6-0, 6-1.
Jose Terrera, German Escallon, Glen Marshall and Andres Monje won 6-0, 6-0 at the bottom four positions, respectively, for UNF.
In doubles play, the Ospreys swept the Dolphins - getting an 8-1 win at the No. 1 position from Leonardo Gomes and Escallon, an 8-0 victory at No. 2 from Terrera and Sigal and an 8-1 win at No. 3 from Marshall and Pereira.
The Ospreys' victory - when coupled with the UNF women's team's 5-2 win over the Dolphins on Tuesday - pushed UNF into a 7-6 lead in the battle for the SunTrust Old Wooden Barrel, which will be awarded the school with the most head-to-head victories at the end of the 2005-06 school year. The schools will meet seven more times in four sports over the next two months to decide the winner.
UNF returns to action on Saturday in Boca Raton against A-Sun foe Florida Atlantic and then faces fifth-ranked Barry (Division II) on Sunday.
