JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida men's tennis' Dominik Barton will embark on the path towards the NCAA Division I Singles Championship Title as he begins play in the field of 64 in Champaign, Ill.
Barton's first test is against JJ Tracy of Ohio State in the round of 64 at 1 p.m. CST tomorrow. The winner is slated to face the winner of Nikola Slavic (Ole Miss) and Filippo Moroni (Wake Forest) in the round of 32.
1. Details on the Field and Championships
The singles championship features 64 individuals with the bracket following a single-elimination format. The Round of 64 begins May 23 with the championship match slated for May 28.Â
All matches will be played at the University of Illinois' Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex, weather permitting.Â
2. Last Time in NCAA Singles Championships
Barton is the first North Florida men's tennis singles championship competitor since Jack Findel-Hawkins advanced all the way to the NCAA Singles Quarterfinals in 2016.
3. The Field
Barton is the lone selection from the ASUN Conference, entering the field as an automatic bid. He joins other automatic bids out of Tulsa, Virginia, VCU, Baylor, Xavier, Ohio State, Hawaii, Old Dominion, Columbia, UNLV, USC, Florida, Denver and San Diego.
The field also features 49 at-large selections.
4. Dom in 2021-22
Barton's 2021-22 season began with a historic fall season that saw him advance to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Semifinals, the best finish for an Osprey in UNF men's tennis Division I history during the fall.
During that historic run, Dom was able to elevate his ITA ranking, factoring heavily into his future selection to the singles championship field in the spring.Â
In between, Barton ran into an injury that limited his ability to be on the court during the beginning of the spring slate. Despite that, Barton turned in a 4-1 mark in ASUN play, while earning nine-straight ITA singles rankings.
5. More Notes from the NCAA
All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches.Â
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 started singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
