CLEVELAND, Tenn. - After setting two school records and 16 personal records Friday, the track and field teams were only able to compete in the 3000m steeple chase at the Flames Invitational Saturday before inclement weather canceled the second day of events.
Queyrou completed the 3000m steeple chase in 9:10.19, placing eighth. Freshman Gavin O'Brien set a personal record in the steeple chase, placing 25th with a time of 9:50.24.Â
"Saturday morning Leo Queyrou set up a great steeple and with just a couple hundred left hit a barrier and went down," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "He was on track for a regional mark but just couldn't get over the last jump."
Not only did the Ospreys set 16 personal records on the first day of the meet, they set two school records as well. Noah Perkins broke the school record in the 5000m Saturday with a time of 14:02.18.
"Perkins broke his own school record surpassing the time that qualified him for the NCAA regional in 2019. After the Achilles injury it was great to finally see him back no in top form."
Both Nathan Jubran (29:27.67) and freshman Jake Turner (29:36.70) broke the school record in the 10000m Saturday.
"In the 10000m, Nathan Jubran and Jake Turner both broke the existing school record running stellar sub 30. Both of these marks would have been regional qualifying marks in all of the previous years so we expect they will hold up for this year as well. The race was 25 laps of grinding where four UNF runners ran strong marks. Jubran continues to run at the level he showed in cross country, with hopes of running at the NCAA final in track as well. Turner's run was inspiring. Rarely does a freshman have the ability to run a such a great race. I've had good guys over the past 32 years but never anyone who could run such a good 10k as a freshman."
The North Florida track and field teams are back in action April 16 for the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.Â
PIGG'S POINTS FROM FRIDAY
"After weather delays pushed us back a couple of hours we had one of the best all around track meets I have ever seen. The team handled the delays well and went about their business. Lydia van Dijk ran a very competitive 1500m placing second and running almost a five second PR. Timothy Doyle and Jared Vazquez also ran well in their heats, for Vazquez it was a lifetime best and good to see him back at that level. Robert Pedroza ran well and won his heat and gaining some good experience navigating a crowded race. Freshman Thomas Weiler ran strong in his heat placing well and having a new solid PR as well. In the women's 5000m Camryn Cooney showed the pace she had two years ago just missing her pr but running a very strong sub 17:30. Grace Gumpel also had a nice PR and competed well. In the second heat Sadie McLaughlin came from way back in the closing two laps to pass three runners and win her section. This strong finish gave her a 10 second PR. Raquel ran a two minute best in her 10k just steadily licking people off throughout the race." -- Head coach Jeff Pigg
