Women's Tennis Picks Up First ASUN Win, Downs FGCU 5-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The North Florida women's tennis team picked up its first ASUN win, downing FGCU, 5-2. UNF claimed the doubles point and freshman Annabelle Davis clinched the match on court six in the victory.

The Ospreys were down 0-1 in doubles play after Valentina Mariotto and Annabelle Davis were blanked, 6-0, on court three by Alba Retortillo and Lourdes Ramalle. Partners Lucia Montano and Constanza Gorches answered back to even the score, downing Sofia Perez and Ida Ferding, 6-1, in the two slot.

North Florida claimed the doubles point after a hard battle on court one. Catherine Gulihur and Ana Paula Melilo edged Maja Ornberg and Emma Bardet, 6-3. Gulihur and Melilo are now 9-2 in the one slot in doubles.

Montano claimed the first singles point of the day with a win on court one. She blanked Ornberg 6-0 in the first set and downed her 6-2 in the second. Gulihur claimed a victory on court two shortly after Montano to bring UNF to a 3-0 lead. The junior transfer dominate Perez 6-1, 6-2.

The remaining four courts all went to a third set. FGCU claimed the next singles point making the score 3-1. The Eagles' Ferding edged Gorches 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the four slot.

Freshman Annabelle Davis clinched the match for the Ospreys with a victory on court six. She downed Ramalle 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, making her 3-0 in singles in her first season with North Florida.

Summer Yardley added another point for UNF with a win on court five. Yardley edged Retortillo, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. FGCU claimed the last court in singles. Melilo dropped the decision 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-7 (3-7), to Fanny Norin in the three slot.

North Florida travels to Stetson Sunday to continue ASUN play.
