COLUMBUS, Ohio - North Florida men's tennis could not overcome a tough Ohio State squad as the No. 2 Buckeyes grabbed the 4-0 win in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship match on Sunday afternoon.
QUICK HITS
- With five players ranked in the top 120 singles in the country, Ohio State took the doubles point and never looked back.Â
- Lasse Muscheites grabbed a set from No. 57 John McNally in the No. 3 position, but trailed in the second set when the match was called.
- Freshman Joe Ellis took three games from his opponent in the No. 5 spot, while classmate Nilo Duarte took five before falling in No. 6 singles.
SAY WHAT
"First off congratulations to Ty and his staff and team. They played relentless, disciplined, aggressive tennis and we never could quite get our footing. We saw first hand what a national title contending team looks like and I'm hopeful the guys will be mindful of where we were deficient, as well as some things that worked well against such a high quality opponent.
Â
As far as the weekend overall, it was a tremendous opportunity, and I felt like we embraced that. Winning a big 4-3 match over a very good Tulsa team and not playing timid against the #2 team in the country is a successful weekend from my perspective. Clearly we still have much to improve on, but what stood out to me was how much better we competed versus in Tallahassee. We still haven't played our best tennis and that will come. The commitment to competing the correct way has to be a constant and it was this weekend. If we can continue to compete this way I like the direction we are headed. The boys are super excited for our first home matches this coming weekend!" - Head Coach Matt Lucas
