TULSA, Okla. – In his second straight appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship, North Florida men's tennis junior Jack Findel-Hawkins let the match slip away on Wednesday as his singles championship came to a close in the Round of 64 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Mississippi State's Rishab Agarwall, ranked 54th in the country, came from behind to defeat 109th-ranked Findel-Hawkins, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1).
The day began with a slight delay as the Tulsa area was hit with rain in the early morning hours, which pushed the match back almost an hour. The delay had no effect on Findel-Hawkins as he stormed out of the gate to take the opening set of the contest, 6-3, before Agarwal bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set.
In the third and deciding set, both Agarwal and Findel-Hawkins held serve, and the match was in Findel-Hawkins' favor at 6-5 with Agarwal serving to stay in the match. At 40-30, Agarwal grabbed match point to force the deciding tiebreaker. After building a quick 4-0 lead in the breaker, he did not look back, winning the tiebreaker 7-1.
Findel-Hawkins trip to the NCAA Championship is not over though as the junior competes with Yannick Zuern at 1:30 p.m. in the doubles bracket.Â
