WACO, Texas – University of North Florida men's tennis' Jack Findel-Hawkins begins play at the NCAA Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday and faces University of Southern California's Roberto Quiroz in the Round of 64. Match time is set for approximately 12:30 p.m. EST, at Baylor University's Hurd Tennis Center.
Â
"Jack has done a superb job of getting back to his full fitness level in such a short period of time," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "We had a great match last year against USC in the doubles first round, so I know Jack is excited about facing another USC opponent. He is ready to get out there and compete again."
Â
This is Findel-Hawkins' second trip to the NCAA Championships. Last season, he qualified with doubles partner Norbert Nemcsek and the duo knocked off top-ranked Yannick Hanfmann and Ray Sarmiento of USC.
Â
Findel-Hawkins, who is ranked No. 96 in the most recent ITA poll that was released on May 1, was one of 15 automatic singles qualifiers. An additional 49 players received at-large bids in order to make up the field of 64. He is the first Osprey in Division I history to earn a NCAA Single Championship berth.
Â
Findel-Hawkins makes his return to the courts after missing the last two months due to injury. However, prior to his injury, Findel-Hawkins recorded a 13-6 overall singles record and was 5-2 this spring. All of his spring matches were played at the No. 1 position.
Â
He has faced 10 nationally-ranked opponents so far this fall and spring. Among those that he faced were USF's Sasha Gozun and Roberto Cid in the semifinals and finals, respectively, at the Bedford Cup. Findel-Hawkins defeated both players in three sets in order to win the Bedford Cup Singles Championship.
Â
Quiroz comes into Wednesday's match ranked No. 25 nationally. He's compiled a 25-6 overall mark and is 17-4 in dual match play this spring. Quiroz has played primarily at the No. 2 position in USC's line-up, going 14-4 at that spot. He helped the No. 7 Trojans to a berth to the NCAA Team Championships, going 2-0 with wins over the No. 35 and No. 41 ranked players.
Â
Winner of tomorrow's match advances to Thursday's Round of 32 and will play the winner of the match with Illinois' Farris Gosea and Notre Dame's Quentin Monaghan.
