Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Paulina Zaveckaite registered a 20-point, 20-rebound double-double, but a difficult second half hurt University of North Florida women's basketball in a 59-50 loss to USC Upstate on Thursday at UNF Arena.
Â
Zaveckaite's double-double is the first time an Osprey registered 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. Prior to Thursday, only Zaveckaite and former All-American Skye Barber had come close to those marks in UNF's history. Barber tallied a 17-point, 20-rebound double-double against USC Upstate on Feb. 9, 2002, which was the first 20-rebound performance in Osprey history. Earlier this season, Zaveckaite had a 17-point, 23-rebound double-double, setting UNF's single-game rebounds record.
Â
Zaveckaite is the second Atlantic Sun player this season to have 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game. USC Upstate's Brittany Starling notched a 21-point, 20-rebound performance against Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 13, 2014.
Â
"Paulina's so motivated and believes so much in her abilities," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "She's a relentless competitor and is one of the most passionate kids I've ever coached. I've very proud of Paulina and that's probably one of the best games I've seen her play."
Â
Destinee Smith added in 12 points for the Ospreys.
Â
UNF shot 33.9 percent (20-for-59) for the game and out-rebounded the Spartans 46-42.
Â
Starling registered a 15-point 11-rebound double-double and Sharmayne Edwards scored 17 points to lead USC Upstate. Brittany Clency tallied 11 points and Travonda Haddock dished out five assists.
Â
USC Upstate shot 34.8 percent (24-for-69) and was 47.6 percent (10-for-21) from three-point range.
Â
It was a very aggressive and physical game and we executed our game plan fairly well," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We had a lot of newcomers in situations they've never been in before and we played against a very experience USC Upstate team. We had some defensive mishaps and miscues, but we continued to battle. It's been a tough season. We still have six games left and a lot of work to do."
Â
A slow start to the first half saw UNF trailed by nine as a Clency trey at 14:50 quickly put USC Upstate up 16-7. UNF overcame that start and fought back, using a Kadesia Johnson layup at 7:21 to pull to within one and make it 24-23. UNF continued to battled and ultimately took a 27-26 lead with 4:00 to go on a Smith layup. The Ospreys and Spartans traded baskets and UNF held a one-point 31-30 lead after a Zaveckaite jumper at 48 seconds. Edwards hit a trey with 25 seconds remaining in the half as USC Upstate carried a 33-31 advantage into the break.
Â
Both teams had slow starts to the second half, but after USC Upstate took a three-point lead, UNF went on a 6-0 run. A pair of free throws from Zaveckaite at 13:12 capped the run as UNF held a 39-36 advantage. However, a costly five-and-a-half minute UNF scoring drought saw USC Upstate go on a 15-0 run and take a 51-39 lead at 8:34. Zaveckaite hit two free throws at 7:30 to snap the scoring drought and sparked an eight-point Osprey run. UNF's scoring spurt allowed the Ospreys to cut USC Upstate's lead down to 51-47 at 4:40, but that was as close as UNF could get as USC Upstate finished the game on an 8-3 run.
Â
UNF concludes its three-game homestand on Saturday against Kennesaw State at UNF Arena at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the Ospreys will honor its three senior student-athletes – Destinee Smith, Brittney Wright and Paulina Zaveckaite – and senior manager Andrew Nickerson for their contributions to the program. It is also UNF's Play 4Kay game and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
