Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball seniors Paulina Zaveckaite and Destinee Smith combined for 35 points on Saturday, but Kennesaw State had four players in doubles figures and a hot second half as the Ospreys fell 64-52 at UNF Arena during what were Senior Day and the Ospreys' Play 4Kay game.
Â
"We did a very nice job defensively in the first half, but we did not guard well in the second half and they shot 56.0 percent then," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We lost our defensive principles; you got to make stops. You've got to keep battling. We have four games left to continue to get better. We've got a lot of new kids in unfamiliar situations. It's time for the young kids to step up."
Â
Zaveckaite paced the team with 18 points, while Destinee Smith added in 17. Zaveckaite also grabbed nine rebounds.
Â
UNF shot 39.6 percent (21-for-53) for the game.
Â
Aareon Smith led the Owls with 19 points. Jasmine McAllister and Karly Frye each tallied 13 points and Kristina Wells scored 12. Both McAllister and Wells grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Â
Kennesaw State shot 46.7 percent (21-for-45) for the game, including 56.0 percent (14-for-25) in the second half. The Owls also held a 34-28 rebounding advantage.
Â
Control of the first half went back and forth between the two teams. After UNF got out to an early four-point lead, Kennesaw State took advantage of a six-and-a-half minute UNF scoreless stretch and went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-7 lead on a Frye three-pointer at 14:08. The Ospreys answered with a seven-point run of their own that was sparked by a Kadesia Johnson jumper at 11:22 to go up 14-11. Kennesaw State came back to tie the game two times before UNF gained another three-point lead. A Destinee Smith three-point at 4:19 gave the Ospreys a 19-16 lead. However, the Owls closed out the first half on a 13-2 run that was started by a Kelly Dulkoski three-pointer at 2:41 in order to take a 29-21 lead into the break.
Â
After Kennesaw State a pair of double-digit leads twice early in the second half, UNF cut the deficit down to six on multiple occasions. Among those was when Zaveckaite knocked down two free throws at 11:26 to make it 40-34. However, Kennesaw State started to pull away and outscored the Ospreys 11-5 over the next five minutes to take a 54-39 lead at 7:24. UNF attempted to cut into the Owls' lead and came to within 10 on a Zaveckaite jumper at 5:03 that made it 55-45. A jumper from McAllister started a 9-2 run that allowed the Owls to take their largest lead, a 17-point 64-47 lead with 1:00 to go. UNF had the game's last five points with a Smith three-pointer and two Johnson free throws.
Â
The Ospreys return to the road for the next two games. UNF visits Lipscomb on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., EST from Allen Arena.
