LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The North Florida men's cross country team and sophomore women's cross country runner Eden Meyer had solid performances Saturday in the highly competitive Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
In a field full of regional and nationally ranked squads, the Ospreys placed 19th over the 8k layout that will serve as the host course for the NCAA Championships. Junior Michael Damato was the team's top performer finishing in a time of 25:06. Tyler Bennett was UNF's second finisher in 25:35 with Justin Bryan (25:41), Tyler Stahl (25:52) and freshman Fynn Timm, with a personal record (25:55), rounding out the group of scoring runners. Other runners in the event for North Florida included Manny Velasquez (26:02) and Bradley Langenberg, who posted a personal best 26:04.
Iona claimed the team title with Michigan, Louisville, Ole Miss and Illinois wrapping up the top five squads.
"This was a real eye opening meet for our guys," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "There was some fierce competition from a lot of good teams. I feel like we learned some things and will be much more prepared in the future. (Mike) Damato ran a solid race and (Tyler) Bennett also ran well again. Hopefully, we can get a couple of our guys back in our lineup soon."
In addition to the men's team, Meyer ran as an individual in the women's 5k race earning a 45th-place showing with a season best 17:39 clocking.
"Eden had a very solid day," added Pigg. "I feel like this was definitely a growth experience for her to race against such high level competitors."
North Florida will be off for a couple weeks before closing out the regular season schedule on Oct. 16 at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
