Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Turnovers and another night of cold-shooting was costly to University of North Florida women's basketball in a 67-38 home-opening Atlantic Sun loss to Stetson on Saturday at UNF Arena.
Â
"There's a reason why I think Stetson is the most talented team in the league," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Offensively, Stetson got easy points on our turnovers. We didn't execute our game plan. To go against one of the top teams, you have to be firing on all cylinders."
Â
Paulina Zaveckaite led the Ospreys with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Â
Facing the Atlantic Sun's top defensive team, the Ospreys only shot 27.3 percent (15-for-55).
Â
Jama Sharp paced Stetson with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double and also made eight steals. Myeisha Hall and Brianti Saunders tallied 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Stetson shot 48.3 percent (28-for-58) for the game and made 16 steals. The Hatters also converted on 33 points off UNF's 22 turnovers.
Â
Both teams tallied 38 rebounds.
Â
With UNF trailing by one early in the first half, Stetson took advantage of a five-minute Osprey scoring drought, going on a 13-0 run to take a 20-6 lead at 10:54. A Flo Ward three-pointer at 10:33 broke the Ospreys' scoreless streak. UNF pulled to within eight at 7:25 with Bailey Florin hitting a trey to make it 24-16. Stetson ended the first half on a 13-0 run in order to take a 37-16 lead into halftime.
Â
After Destinee Smith had the first five points of the second half, UNF and Stetson traded baskets with a Paulina Zaveckaite layup at 11:13 making it 46-27. However, the Hatters used multiple runs to pull away, going on a 10-0 run to take a 56-27 lead at 7:25 and then a 9-0 spurt to go up 65-32 at 2:15. UNF ultimately scored six of the game's final eight points.
