Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Destinee Smith hit the game-winning three-pointer at 4.4 seconds in the second overtime as University of North Florida women's basketball edged out Northern Kentucky 81-79 for the Ospreys' first Atlantic Sun victory of the season.
Â
"I'm proud of how this team bounced back tonight after last week," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We got big contributions from our bench, which included Maiya [Rumph] doing a great job defensively. We keep putting ourselves in these late-game situations that we can continue to learn and grow from. We battled hard with a tough Northern Kentucky team for 48 minutes to get our first conference win. I'm really proud of our grit."
Â
It was UNF's first double-overtime game since falling 66-63 at Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 28, 2011. Additionally, UNF had not won a double-overtime game since defeating Campbell 65-62 on Jan. 29, 2011.
Â
Meanwhile, for the Ospreys this season, Thursday night was the fifth time in which a game has been decided in the final five seconds. UNF edged out Tennessee State (buzzer-beater), Mercer (2.9 seconds) and UMKC (final second), but fell to Jacksonville (0.6 seconds) in the previous four close games.
Â
Smith paced UNF with 19 points, while Paulina Zaveckaite tallied a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double. Bailey Florin added in 18 points.
Â
UNF shot 41.4 percent (29-for-70) for the game and had a 51-42 advantage in rebounds.
Â
Christine Roush tallied a game-high 28 points, while Melody Doss recorded an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. Rianna Gayheart notched 13 points.
Â
Northern Kentucky shot 36.6 percent (26-for-71) from the floor.
Â
With a close start to the first half that included six ties, UNF led by as many as five points on two occasions, including at 6:19 when Janeá Williams hit a pair of free throws to make it 26-21. Northern Kentucky answered with a 10-point run in order to go up 31-26 on a Doss trey at 1:43. The Ospreys made two foul shots in the half's final minute, but trailed Northern Kentucky 31-28 at the break.
Â
Each team held a five-point advantage in the second half. The Norse went up 37-32 at 16:26 on a Doss layup. UNF fought back with a 15-5 run and took a 47-42 lead on a Florin three-pointer at 12:45. After the Norse connected on back-to-back three's to take a one-point advantage, Florin hit consecutive treys as UNF held a 53-48 advantage at 8:30. Northern Kentucky kept chipping away at the Ospreys' lead and ultimately tied it at 62-62 on a Roush trey at 58 seconds. A Smith jumper and a Brittney Wright free put UNF up 65-62 at six seconds. However, Roush drained a three-point shot as time expired to send the game into overtime.
Â
UNF struck first in overtime with a Maiya Rumph jumper at 4:45. Northern Kentucky went on a 7-2 run to take a 72-69 advantage on a Roush layup at 2:57. A Rumph layup at 2:26 brought UNF to within one. Bailey Florin later converted on a critical three-point play that allowed the Ospreys to take a 74-72 lead with 38 seconds to go. A layup from Kasey Uetrecht evened the game at 74-74 with eight seconds remaining. UNF had one last shot in the final second, but was unable to get the basket.
Â
A foul off the tip put Florin at the line and she converted on one of her two foul shots that allowed UNF to go up 75-74. The Ospreys maintained that one-point advantage for much of the next three minutes. Gayheart hit a trey at 2:00 that allowed Northern Kentucky to gain a two-point 77-75 lead. The Norse pushed their lead to four as Doss sank both free throws at 25 seconds. Smith hit a critical three at 13 seconds to bring the Ospreys to within one. After the Norse missed two foul shots, Amber Robinson grabbed a critical defensive rebound and UNF got up the floor with Smith connecting on the game-winning trey.
Â
UNF returns to action on Saturday against Lipscomb. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., from UNF Arena. The game will air live on ESPN3 with Brent Martineau and Jessica Blaylock on the call.
