EUGENE, Ore. -- The No. 51-ranked North Florida men's golf team tees off in its fifth consecutive NCAA Regional, Thursday at 8:55 a.m. (PT) on the links of Eugene Country Club (par 72, 6,990 yards).
The Ospreys will be making their 10th NCAA Regional appearance as a Division I program and the sixth under ninth-year head coach Scott Schroeder. UNF has enjoyed recent success in NCAA Regional play having claimed the team title last season in Tallahassee, Fla. The squad has advanced to the NCAA Championship tournament in three of the last four seasons including each of the past two seasons.
UNF's visit to Eugene marks the furthest postseason travel for the program and just the second visit to the West Coast, having qualified for the 2012 NCAA Championships held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. In 2011, the Ospreys participated at an NCAA Regional in Erie, Colo.
"The course is right up there with some of the best we have seen," said Schroeder. "We are looking forward to a unique challenge since the course is different than any courses we have played. The trees around the course are enormous and the greens are playing extremely quick. Fortunately, we have enjoyed a few days of good preparation. I am looking forward to seeing how the guys handle and perform in the different situation."
First-team All-Atlantic Sun junior standout MJ Maguire heads up the Osprey lineup for the event. Maguire, who is ranked 50th nationally by Golfstat, tops the team with a 72.39 stroke average and will be making his fifth appearance in an NCAA postseason event. Fellow junior Joey Petronio will also be appearing in his fifth NCAA competition. The junior duo will be joined by junior newcomer Parker Jones and sophomores Taylor Hancock and Austin Padova. Hancock was a member of last season's regional championship squad and played in the NCAA Championships.
The Ospreys, who are the ninth-seed in the Eugene Regional will compete against a slew of other nationally-ranked squads including No. 3 Stanford, No. 10 Houston, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 22 South Carolina, No. 27 Baylor, No. 34 Liberty, No. 40 Oregon (host) No. 47 Tennessee, No. 51 North Florida, No. 58 East Tennessee State, No. 64 Chattanooga, No. 116 Wichita State and No. 151 Northern Colorado. Ten individuals from San Jose State, Air Force, Oregon State, Sacramento State, Pacific, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, UC Irvine and Pepperdine will also be playing in the event.
The top five team finishers along with the top individual finisher not one of the five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in Wichita, Kan., on May 27-June 1. The NCAA Regional is a three-day, 54-hole competition.
North Florida will be paired with Oregon and Tennessee in round one starting on hole No. 1. Live results are available at Golfstat.com.
