EUGENE, Ore. -- The No. 51-ranked North Florida men's golf team fired an opening round 286 (+6) Thursday at the NCAA Eugene Regional ending the day tied for third place.
The Ospreys got off to a great start on the par 70, 6,990-yard layout of Eugene Country Club holding the team competition lead midway through their round. Junior MJ Maguire led the way for UNF carding a 2-under 68 to end the day tied for fourth in medalist play.
"We got off to a great start today and kept it going for awhile," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We struggled a bit coming down the stretch but overall it was a solid start for us. MJ played well all day. The guys just need to rest up because this course requires a bunch of mental energy and we need to be at our best for tomorrow's round."
Sophomore Austin Padova and junior Parker Jones both posted rounds of 2-over 72 and joined Maguire among the Top 25 after finishing round tied for 21st. Junior Joey Petronio is tied for 41st following a round of 74, while sophomore Taylor Hancock rounded out the Osprey lineup with a 75 (T-48th).
No. 3-ranked Stanford leads the team standings after tallying a 4-under 276 over the opening 18 holes of play. No. 15 Oklahoma is in second at 280 with UNF and No. 22 South Carolina tied for third. Tournament host No. 40 Oregon is fifth at 289 followed by No. 10 Houston (290), No. 27 Baylor (294), Chattanooga (295), No. 34 Liberty (295), Wichita State (295), ETSU (296), No. 47 Tennessee (299) and Northern Colorado (307).
The Cardinals' Patrick Rodgers posted a 4-under 66 and leads medalist play by one stroke over the duo of Chris Robb (Chattanooga) and Kyle Westmoreland (Air Force).
Tournament play continues Friday with second round play at Eugene CC. The Ospreys will be paired with Oregon and Houston off of hole No. 1 beginning at 8:20 a.m. (PT).
