JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball began its season-ending series with a doubleheader split with Stetson Wednesday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex. Stetson took Game One 3-1, but UNF rebounded with a 2-0 shutout in Game Two. The Ospreys' last five wins against Stetson have been shutouts.
However, UNF's postseason hopes were dashed after the first game's loss. The Ospreys needed to sweep Stetson in order keep their postseason hopes alive.
All runs scored in the first game were the result of home runs. Mariah Reynolds' two-out solo shot to right center in the second put UNF up 1-0.
Stetson tied the game on Demi Meza's solo home run to center field in the top of the fourth. Meza then hit a two-run shot to right center in the sixth that gave the Hatters a 3-1 lead.
Kaylie Wallace was credited with the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – off six hits in 7.0 innings. She also struck out three.
Meredith Owen had the win after allowing one run off six hits in 7.0 innings. She also struck seven batters.
Danica Mandarano went 2-for-3 for the Ospreys.
Meza was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Kayla Drury was also 2-for-3.
In Game Two, UNF got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Katie Mandigo scored on Ashia Kerr's double to right center for the game's first run.
The Ospreys tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Mandarano sped home on Marissa Thomas' hit to center field.
Cortney Radke was credited with the win and picked up her 11th career shutout. Radke allowed five hits and struck out three in 7.0 innings of work.
Owen received the loss after allowing two runs off four hits in 6.0 innings. She also struck out seven.
Mandarano, Thomas, Mandigo and Kerr each had hits for the Ospreys.
Five different Hatters had one hit in Game Two.
UNF's season comes to a close on Thursday with the series finale against Stetson at 1 p.m., at the UNF Softball Complex. This is a time change as the game was moved up an hour in order to avoid possible inclement weather expected in the Jacksonville area on Thursday. Admission to all UNF softball home games is free.
