JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball concludes the regular season with a critical mid-week, three-game Atlantic Sun series against Stetson at the UNF Softball Complex. The series begins with a doubleheader on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and concludes with a single game on Thursday at 2 p.m.
The series will help determine the Ospreys' postseason fate for next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament. UNF is vying with Florida Gulf Coast for the first spot in the six-team tournament. The Ospreys, who enter Wednesday with a 9-15 conference record, need to sweep Stetson and hope that Florida Gulf Coast, who is 11-13 in the Atlantic Sun, gets swept at Northern Kentucky this weekend. Any UNF loss or a Florida Gulf Coast win will eliminate UNF from tournament contention.
UNF returns to its home field for the first time in nearly a month. The Ospreys were last in action at the UNF Softball Complex Apr. 5-6 when they swept cross-town rival Jacksonville in the three-game series. Since then, UNF was on the road for seven-straight games, which began with a 12-inning 2-1 victory at Bethune-Cookman on Apr. 9.
Stetson has already locked up a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and this week's series will have seeding implications for the Hatters. The Hatters dropped last weekend's series 2-1 to Jacksonville in DeLand, but ended the series with an 8-3 win on Sunday after being swept in Saturday's doubleheader. Stetson ranks second in the Atlantic Sun in team batting (.302 average), pitching (.190 ERA) and field (.972 percentage). Meredith Owen leads the Atlantic Sun with a 0.84 ERA in 166.2 Innings pitched and is the only pitcher in the conference with under a 1.00 ERA. She also helps generate offense for the Hatters and is tied for fourth in conference in home runs (13). Meanwhile, Jessie Tenbroeck is batting a team-best .362 with 51 hits and 44 runs.
UNF leads the all-time series 18-12 and won three of the four meetings last season. When UNF and Stetson met the last time, Marissa Thomas' lead-off homer in the bottom of the fifth lifted the Ospreys to a 1-0 win in an elimination game at the Atlantic Sun Tournament on May 9, 2013. UNF's last four wins against Stetson have been shutouts.
Admission to all UNF softball home games is free.
