BRASELTON, Ga. -- The No. 48-ranked North Florida men's golf team finished in fourth place at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships after shooting a final round 303 Tuesday at The Legends at Chateau Elan.
The Ospreys concluded the 54-hole event with a total of 895. The finish marked the first time in 10 ASun Championship appearances that UNF did not finish among the top three teams. Sophomore Taylor Hancock shot a 76 in the final round and was the team's top performer in the event earning a tie for seventh at 220 (+4).
In Tuesday's final round, junior Joey Petronio led the way for UNF carding a 1-over 73 on the par 72, 7,023-yard layout. Petronio's solid last day allowed him to join Hancock among the individual Top 10, claiming a tie for ninth at 221.
Junior All-American MJ Maguire fired a final round 76 to finish 16th at 226 while sophomores Austin Padova and Joe Stepnes both posted rounds of 78 to complete the UNF lineup. Padova and Stepnes finished tied for 31st (233) and 42nd (236), respectively.
No. 28 Mercer captured the team championship finishing with a three-day total of 874 with No. 42 Kennesaw State in second at 880. ETSU was third at 884 followed by UNF, Lipscomb (915), Jacksonville (917), USC Upstate (923), Stetson (927), Northern Kentucky (929) and Florida Gulf Coast (934). The Bears' Trey Rule was the individual medalist after carding a 1-under 215.
"We played really poorly today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "Taylor and Joey ended up with nice finishes but the rest of the team was not very good. Getting the win over JU and helping UNF clinch the barrel was one bright spot. We now need to get back to campus and take our finals and then get prepared for postseason play in the regionals. We have the talent to make some noise at regionals but we need to be playing our best as a team."
With the 22-shot victory over crosstown rival Jacksonville, North Florida picked up another point in the SunTrust River City Rumble competition and now lead 11-10 with just one competition (women's outdoor track) remaining. The golf win guarantees the Ospreys at least a tie in the final standings and keeps the Old Wooden Barrel on the UNF campus for a third consecutive year.
North Florida's finish also most likely secures the team a sixth consecutive invitation to NCAA Regional play. The NCAA field will be announced on Monday, May 5, with regional play scheduled for May 15-17 at one of six places including: Auburn, Ala., Columbia, Mo., Raleigh, N.C., Sugar Grove, Ill., Eugene, Ore., San Antonio, Texas.
