
#SB Tops Northern Kentucky 11-2 in Slugfest

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – University of North Florida softball powered past Northern Kentucky 11-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Frank Ignatius Grien Softball Field in order to claim the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series. Despite the nine-run score difference, UNF and Northern Kentucky combined for 22 hits with the Ospreys having 10 and the Norse tallying 12.

The Ospreys tallied runs in five of the seven innings, including multi-run innings in the first, fourth and seventh.

UNF got out to an early 4-0 run in the first with a Marissa Thomas RBI single, a Ashia Kerr RBI double and a Rachel Engel two-run single. Northern Kentucky answered with one run in the bottom half of the first as KC Straley got home on Katelyn Roy's hit to make it a three-run game.

After two scoreless innings, Thomas belted a two-run single up the middle that brought home Katie Mandigo and Danica Mandarano as the Ospreys went up 6-1 in the fourth. However, Northern Kentucky added another run in the bottom of the fourth with Alexis VanHorn scoring on Dee Dee Davis' hit to center field.

UNF tacked on one run in both the fifth and sixth innings in order to extend its lead. In the fifth, Ashley Schofill's single an RBI single up the middle that brought home Mariah Reynolds from second. In the sixth, Kerr drilled a RBI triple to right center to drive in Ashley Holton and put UNF up 8-2.

The Ospreys finished the game with a three-run seventh inning. A two-out, bases loaded walk allowed Reynolds to cross home for the inning's first run. Two separate bases loaded wild pitches brought in Lexi Taylor and Mandarano to give UNF its nine-run advantage.

Cortney Radke pitched the first 4.2 innings and got the win after allowing two runs off 11 hits. Kaylie Wallace picked up the save after coming in for the final 2.1 innings and entering the game with the potential game-tying run on deck in the fifth inning. Wallace held Northern Kentucky to just one hit and struck out four.

Alex Caudill received the loss after allowing four runs off four hits in 0.1 innings.

Seven Ospreys registered hits with Abby Tewey, Thomas and Kerr each having two.

Eight Norse had hits as Straley, Dani Devlin, Michelle Carson and Van Horn each recorded two.

UNF returns to action with a three-game Atlantic Sun series at Mercer next weekend. The series begins with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m., at Sikes Field
