JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball faces its second nationally-ranked team of the season on Wednesday when No. 10/11 Florida State visits the UNF Softball Complex for a doubleheader. The twinbill begins at 4 p.m.
"Tomorrow will be a very good challenge for us," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "We are looking to get back on track and need to be sharp and play our game against a nationally-ranked opponent."
Â
Wednesday's doubleheader finishes a seven-game homestand for the Ospreys, which is the longest stretch of home games for UNF this season. UNF attempts to end a four-game skid that started with last Tuesday's Game Two loss to Bowling Green. However, the Ospreys began their seven-game homestand with a 4-0 shutout of Bowling Green in Game One, scoring all of their runs in the sixth inning.
Â
Over the weekend, Marissa Thomas belted solo home runs in Game Two and Game Three in the series with USC Upstate. Six different Ospreys have hit homers this season and Thomas leads the team with four already in 2014.
Â
Florida State, who is ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Top 25 and No. 11 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 polls, enter Wednesday riding a four-game winning streak. The Seminoles are already 1-0 against Atlantic Sun teams this season after posting a 5-0 shutout of Florida Gulf Coast on Mar. 12. Florida State has the nation's second-best ERA (0.99) and is the only ACC team with under a 1.00 ERA in the ACC. Lacey Waldrop's 0.59 ERA is third nationally and leads the ACC. Meanwhile, Maddie O'Brien leads the nation in RBI per game (1.69/49 total) and has an ACC-best .453 batting average.
Â
Florida State leads the all-time series 8-1 and won the last meeting 3-1 on Feb. 9, 2013 at the Panhandle Invitational in Tallahassee. UNF's only win in the series was a 5-3 victory at the UNF Softball Complex in Game Two of a Mar. 23, 2009 doubleheader. Since then, Florida State has won the last five games.

Admission to all UNF home softball games is free.
