STATESBORO, Ga. -- The No. 47-ranked North Florida men's golf team struggled Sunday to a ninth-place finish after posting a 307 in final round action at the Schekel Invitational.
The Ospreys, who entered the final round in fourth, ended the 54-hole event with a tournament total 876. After carding the team's best round of the season on Saturday (278), UNF recorded the squad's highest score of the year on Sunday.
"We turned a good event into a very average one in our last six holes today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We did a poor job of playing in the rain. We have very little time to regroup as we need to be ready to play again next weekend. Our next event will have another strong field so hopefully we can bounce back."
Junior All-American MJ Maguire was the Osprey's top performer earning a tie for sixth at two-under 214 after carding a final round 75. Fellow junior Joey Petronio shot the team's best round of the day (74) on Sunday en route to finishing tied for 49th at 223.
Sophomore Taylor Hancock joined Maguire in the Top 25, finishing tied for 22nd at 218 (+2) after a 79. Sophomore Austin Padova also careded a final round 79 to finish tied for 32nd, while senior Taylor Johnson rounded out the UNF lineup with a 87th place finish at 237.
A pair of Ospreys competed as individuals in the event with redshirt freshman Osten Waite tying for 55th at 225 and sophomore Joe Stepnes finishing tied for 60th at 226.
Tournament host Georgia Southern claimed the team championship with a three-round 850, eight strokes ahead of No. 14 UAB and the rest of the 15-team field. No. 6 UCF finished third at 862 followed by No. 10 Virginia (868), No. 15 Texas (868), College of Charleston (869), Georgia State (871), Ole Miss (875), UNF, North Carolina State (881), No. 28 Kentucky (882), Duke (886), Florida (890), North Texas (898) and Maryland (904).
