GREENSBORO, Ga. -- In a field that includes eight teams ranked in the nation's Top 50, the No. 47-ranked North Florida men's golf team ended opening day play in 11th place at the Linger Longer Invitational.
The Ospreys finished Saturday's play with a 36-hole total of 581. After carding an even par 288 in the first round, UNF followed with a 5-over 293 during the afternoon session.
Junior Joey Petronio was the squad's top performer finishing the day tied for 18th with a 2-under 142 (70-72).
"Today's was a very average day at best," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "Nobody stepped up and played really well. Joey continued to play at a higher level but too many sloppy mistakes for the team kept us from putting up some really good scores."
Sophomore Austin Padova is tied for 29th at even par 144 after rounds of 70-74, while junior All-American MJ Maguire is tied for 32nd at 145 (72-73). The Osprey lineup is rounded out by sophomore Taylor Hancock in a tie for 56th at 150 (76-74) and redshirt freshman Osten Waite tied for 71st at 154 (77-77).
Top-ranked Alabama and No. 5 Georgia share the team lead at 20-under 556. Tournament co-host No. 33 Mercer is third at 565 followed by No. 15 Oklahoma (566), co-host No. 37 Kennesaw State (571), Chattanooga (572), No. 26 Clemson (572), No. 41 Liberty (572), South Alabama (575), Yale (580), UNF, Charlotte (586), Michigan State (606), Southern Miss (609) and Furman (624).
The Tide's Robby Shelton leads medalist play by one stroke after firing rounds of 69-66=135 (-9).
Tournament action at the Linger Longer concludes with a final round of 18 holes Sunday at the Great Waters Golf Course. Live results are available online at Golfstat.com.
