JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball won the first game of its doubleheader with Bowling Green by scoring all its runs in the sixth inning, but had its Game Two rally come up short on Tuesday at the UNF Softball Complex. The Ospreys won Game One 4-0, while the Falcons escaped with a 2-1 win.
Â
Game One was a pitching duel and defensive battle. Through five complete innings, Bowling Green registered just two hits and the Ospreys had one.
Â
UNF broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of two costly errors to score all of its runs. With two outs, a fielding miscue in the Falcon outfield allowed Danica Mandarano to score from second to put UNF up 1-0. With runners on the corners in the next at-bat, Marissa Thomas had an infield hit that allowed Ashia Kerr to get home, but a Bowling Green error moved Mariah Reynolds and Thomas into scoring position. Both Reynolds and Thomas scored on Abby Tewey's hit to left field to give the Ospreys the four-run lead.
Â
Kaylie Wallace pitched all 7.0 innings en route to getting the win. Wallace struck out four and limited Bowling Green to two hits.
Â
Jamie Kertes received the loss in 6.0 innings of work. Kertes allowed four hits and struck out three. All four of the Ospreys' runs were unearned.
Â
Thomas led UNF from the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
Â
In Game Two, Bowling Green scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings in order to go up 2-0. The Falcons took advantage of an Osprey fielding error that allowed Emily McClelland to score the game's first run. A Chelsea Raker RBI-double in the fifth drove in Amanda Durham to give the Falcons a two-run lead.
Â
UNF attempted to come back in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and the bases loaded, Danica Mandarano sent a deep sacrifice fly that allowed Katie Mandigo to score. However, that was as close as the Ospreys could get as a groundout in the next at-bat ended the game.
Â
Cortney Radke was credited with the loss, allowing one earned run off six hits in 7.0 innings. She also struck out eight batters.
Â
Braiden Dillow received the win after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing no earned runs off seven hits and striking out one. Kertes came in for the final 0.2 for the save and did not allow a hit.
Â
Both Kerr and Thomas were 2-for-3 from the plate.
Â
Raker went 2-for-2 with one RBI for the Falcons.
Â
UNF returns to action with a three-game Atlantic Sun series against USC Upstate this weekend at the UNF Softball Complex. The series begins with a 1 p.m., doubleheader on Saturday and concludes with a single game at 1 p.m., on Sunday. Admission to all UNF softball home games is free.
