JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball dropped both of its games against USC Upstate on Saturday, falling 5-2 in Game One and then 4-1 in Game Two at the UNF Softball Complex to begin the three-game Atlantic Sun series.
Â
After USC Upstate went up 2-0 early in Game One, UNF battled back to tie it at 2-2. The Spartans capitalized on errors to score a run in both the first and second innings in order to hold a two-run advantage. In the fourth inning, it was UNF's turn to capitalize on miscues as back-to-back USC Upstate errors allowed Ashley Holton to score and make it a one-run game. Abby Tewey drove in the game-tying run in the fifth inning with Ashia Kerr getting home on Tewey's single to center field to make it 2-2.
Â
However, the tie was short-lived as USC Upstate used a three-run top of the sixth to go up 5-2. Kendall Settlemyre led off with a home run to right field, while Shellie Robinson hit an RBI double and Dana Landers had a RBI single to drive in the remaining runs.
Â
Kaylie Wallace had the loss after allowing three earned runs off seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. She also struck out one.
Â
Lexi Shubert pitched a 7.0 innings, allowing one earned run off three hits, and struck out seven en route to being credited with the win.
Â
Tewey, Holton and Lexi Taylor each had one hit for the Ospreys.
Â
Landers was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Â
USC Upstate led the entire Game Two. The Spartans went up 2-0 in the second inning with Ryan Rector and Meredith Barnes both getting home. A sacrifice fly by Kaitlyn Jaeger was deep enough to center field for Lindsey Greeson to score and put USC Upstate 3-0. The Spartans' tacked on their final run in the seventh as Landers' single to right center brought home Robinson from second.
Â
Marissa Thomas provided UNF with its only run of the second game as she hit her third home run of the season in the seventh inning. Thomas' blast went over the left center wall as there were two outs in the inning.
Â
Kayla Goff received the loss after allowing two runs off four hits in the first 1.1 innings.
Â
Anna Miller struck out 13 and limited UNF to one run off two hits in 7.0 innings in order to receive the win.
Â
Rachel Engel, who broke up Miller's no-hitter in the sixth inning with a single up the middle, and Thomas were the only Ospreys to register hits in Game Two.
Â
Landers was 3-for-4 with one RBI in Game Two.
Â
The series concludes with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., from the UNF Softball Complex. Admission to all UNF softball home games is free.
