JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball begins the second half of Atlantic Sun Conference play on Saturday with the season's second SunTrust River City Rumble when cross-town rival Jacksonville comes to UNF Arena at 4:30 p.m. The contest is also UNF's annual Play 4Kay game.
Â
"Tomorrow's game take on a whole different meaning," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "First off, it's the second time we play Jacksonville and you always want to play tough against your rival. But secondly, and most importantly, we're bringing awareness to an even bigger opponent – breast cancer. It is a disease that affects many people, including some people that have been part of the UNF women's basketball program in some way or another. Tomorrow's game is for those that have battled and survived, those that are currently fighting and those that have died."
Â
Play 4Kay is an initiative that raises breast cancer awareness and funds for research. Named for the legendary NC State women's basketball head coach Kay Yow, who succumbed to breast cancer on Jan. 24, 2009, Play 4Kay has raised over $2.8 million for The Kay Yow Cancer Fund. To do their part in the Play 4Kay campaign, UNF will be selling shirts for $15 at Saturday's game.
Â
UNF, who finishes a three-game homestand on Saturday, has traditionally opened the second half of A-Sun play at home. In their nine seasons as an A-Sun member, this is the seventh time the Ospreys have begun the last part of their conference schedule at home. The Ospreys are 5-1 in those games, which included a 56-52 win over Stetson last year on Feb. 2, 2013, which was also UNF's Play 4Kay game.
Â
Jacksonville has its first of three-straight road games on Saturday. The Dolphins, who come off a 66-58 loss to USC Upstate last Saturday at Veterans Memorial Arena, are 3-8 on the road this season and 2-2 when playing away conference games. Sherranda Reddick and Queen Alford lead the Dolphins with 13.3 and 13.0 points per game, respectively. Alford is also grabbing a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game.
Â
Jacksonville leads the all-time series 11-8 and won this year's earlier meeting 74-42 at Veterans Memorial Arena.
Â
At stake with Saturday's game is a point in the SunTrust River City Rumble. Jacksonville currently leads the standings 4.5-3.5.
Â
In addition to the availability of pink shirts for purchase, the first 100 students will receive a free #SWOOPLIFE shirt.
Â
