JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball fell 66-51 to cross-town rival Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble at UNF Arena during the Ospreys' Play 4Kay game.
Â
"We allowed Jacksonville to score 33 points off things that we could control," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We didn't shoot the ball well at all. When that happens, we have to be the better defensive team."
Â
Destinee Smith and Janeá Williams scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Ospreys. Smith also had five assists. Paulina Zaveckaite grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Â
UNF shot 30.8 percent (16-for-52) from the field.
Â
Jade Cargill powered the Dolphins with a 24-point, 14-rebound double-double. Queen Alford and Stephanie Edwards added in 18 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Jacksonville shot 40.4 percent (23-for-57) from the field, but was held without a three-pointer for the entire game. The Dolphins held a 46-37 advantage in rebounds.
Â
A slow start saw the Ospreys trail by as many as 13 in the first half. After Brittany Wright hit a free throw at 15:51 to make it a three-point game, Jacksonville went on a 14-4 run and took a 22-9 lead at 7:36 on an Alford jumper. UNF fought back and cut the Dolphins' lead down to six when Amber Robinson hit a jumper, drew a foul and made the free throw at 4:03 to make it 26-20. Jacksonville finished the first half on a 5-1 spurt to take a 30-21 lead into halftime.
Â
UNF continued to chip away at Jacksonville's lead to start the second half and came to within six at 11:28. After a shooting foul was committed on the court, the Dolphin bench was assessed a technical, sending the Ospreys to the line for four free throws. Chandler Merkerson hit the first two foul shots, which were from the technical, while Bailey Florin made two more to make it 40-34.
Â
Jacksonville responded with a 7-1 run in order to take a 12-point, 47-35 lead on a Cargill jumper at 7:42. UNF cut the Dolphins' lead down to six once again, this time using an 8-2 run to make it 49-43. Smith three-pointer at 5:09 brought the Ospreys to within six. However, that was as close as UNF could get as two free throws from Cargill sparked a 7-0 run that allowed the Dolphins to start to pull away.
Â
UNF returns to action on Thursday at Northern Kentucky. Tip is set for 7 p.m., from The Bank of Kentucky Center.
