JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A challenging set of games awaits University of North Florida women's basketball when the Ospreys host the Atlantic Sun's top two teams at UNF Arena this week. The Ospreys begin the tough slate against conference co-leader Stetson on Thursday night with tip set for 5:30 p.m.
Â
"We are looking forward to being at home this week and the challenge of competing against the top two teams in the conference," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We are focusing on getting better every day and the team is still battling to earn a spot in the tournament."
Â
UNF returns to its home court after a road swing that took the Ospreys to Northern Kentucky last Thursday and Lipscomb on Saturday. UNF averaged 69.5 points per game during that two-game swing and had three players tally double-digit points in both of those games. Larkira Jones tallied a career-high 19 points at Northern Kentucky, while Brittney Wright added a career-high 19 points at Lipscomb.
Â
Thursday night's game against Stetson will test the Ospreys' defense. UNF has boasted one of the Atlantic Sun's top defenses throughout much of the season and enter Thursday ranked third in the conference in scoring defense (63.8 points allowed). However, Stetson is one of the Atlantic Sun's top offensive teams and leads the conference in scoring offense (79.4 points per game), scoring margin (+13.2), field goal percentage (.462) and three-point field goal percentage (.353).
Â
Five Hatters average double-digit points with Sasha Sims leading the way with 15.8 points per game. Amber Porter, who is second in scoring with 13.8 points per game, averages a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game and has tallied 86 blocks on the season.
Â
Stetson holds a 9-8 lead in the all-time series and won the last game 75-67 in DeLand on Jan. 23. However, UNF holds a 7-1 advantage when the series is played in Jacksonville and has won the last two meetings that have taken place at UNF Arena.
Â
