AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. -- After having four months off from competition for the winter break, the North Florida women's golf team returns to competition beginning Monday at the Amelia Island Collegiate hosted by Jacksonville University.
The two-day, 54 hole event will be played at Amelia National. The 14-team field will open competition with 36 holes of play Monday beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
The Ospreys, who earned a program best runner-up finish in their fall finale in October, will be making their first appearance as a team following the tragic loss of Tess Huber in mid-December. Huber was the team's top performer during the fall before passing away in a plane crash.
"The team is looking forward to getting back on the course and competing," said UNF head coach Joanne Steele. "They finished out the fall season on a strong note with a second place finish at the JU Classic and want to continue to build on the success from the fall. The team is aware that one of their teammates, best friends and leaders, Tess Huber, is not visually on the course with them but is in their hearts and looking down from above giving them the confidence, determination and strength she portrayed day in and day out."
Competing for UNF in their spring opener will be sophomores Emelie Alpe, Kelly Aylwin and Belinda George along with freshmen Nathalie Nygren and Lauren Coe. In addition, sophomore Mary Rodgers is participating in the event as an individual.
The field at the Amelia Island Collegiate includes UNF, JU, Cincinnati, Daytona State College, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Illinois State, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Stetson, Winthrop, Wofford and Xavier.
North Florida will be paired with FAU and Daytona State in Monday's opening round play.
