ORLANDO, Fla. - North Florida senior golfer Joey Petronio carded a final round hole-in-one Tuesday to help the No. 47-ranked Ospreys claim a fifth-place finish at the highly competitive Tavistock Collegiate Invitational.
Petronio, a native of Orlando, aced the 17th hole at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club to cap off his 3-under par 69 on the final day. He completed the 54-hole event in a tie for 13th at 211 along with fellow senior MJ Maguire, who shot a final round 73 (+1).
As a team, UNF overcame a sluggish front nine that saw the team shoot a combined 5-over par before posting a cumulative 7-under par on the back nine. The Ospreys finished the round with a 5-under par 283 en route to a tournament total of 15-under par 849.
"We got off to a terrible start today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "I was a bit disappointed in the start but extremely proud of how we turned things around and played the last 10 holes really well. To play that strong alongside the No. 1 ranked team in the country was a big time job by the guys. Hopefully, that will be a confidence boost for the team moving forward. It was pretty cool for Joey (Petronio) to get the hole-in-one while playing a tournament in his hometown for the last time in his collegiate career."
Junior Taylor Hancock carded his best career tournament total shooting a 2-under par 214 highlighted by a final round 3-under 69. It marked his first career under-par tournament total and earned him a tie for 26th place. Redshirt freshman Dillon Woods fired a final round even-par 72, a career best score, to finish play tied for 46th  at 219 along with junior teammate Austin Padova, who finished with a 75 on Tuesday.
No. 2 ranked Florida State posted a 13-under par 275 on the final day to rally for the team title with a score of 827, two shots in front of round two leader No. 12 Vanderbilt at 829. No. 7 Texas Tech was third at 838 followed by No. 1 Illinois (841) and UNF in the top five. Vandy's Hunter Stewart edged teammate Carson Jacobs by a single stroke, 203 to 204, in earning the medalist crown.
North Florida has a quick turnaround with the Ospreys returning to competition Oct. 27-28 at the Quail Valley Collegiate in Vero Beach, Fla.
