JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The first part of Atlantic Sun play comes to a close for University of North Florida women's basketball team on Saturday when the Ospreys host ETSU at UNF Arena at 4:30 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with UNF's men's program.
Â
"Home court is a place that you have to protect," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We have to bounce back from last night, put that behind us and focus on ETSU. They are a competitive team that knows how to fight for every possession. We need to be ready to play 40 minutes of strong defense and be confident with our offensive abilities."
Â
The Ospreys attempt to rebound from a 62-51 setback suffered to USC Upstate on Thursday night. Destinee Smith led the Ospreys with 14 points and four steals. Meanwhile, Larkira Jones grabbed nine rebounds and one block, moving closer to the Atlantic Sun's No. 12 career blocking leaders. Jones enters Saturday with 144 blocks, which is two shy of Georgia Southern's Phylette Blake and Kennesaw State's Sametria Gideon's total of 146.
Â
Saturday is the first time since the 2010-11 season and the fourth time in the Osprey's Division history in which UNF ends the first part of conference play at home. The last time UNF completed the beginning part of A-Sun play at UNF Arena, the Ospreys posted a 58-44 win over cross-town rival Jacksonville on Jan. 27, 2011.
Â
The road has not been friendly to ETSU this season as the Bucs still search for their first road win. The Bucs have suffered two straight losses, including Thursday night's road loss at Jacksonville. However, in each of its conference wins – Lipscomb and Kennesaw State – the Bucs have posted over 70 points. Cara Bowling, who is among the top-10 Atlantic Sun active scoring leaders, is ETSU's scoring leader with 12.7 points per game, but did not play in the loss at Jacksonville. Brianna McQueen is averaging 11.7 points per game and tallied a team-best 12 points against the Dolphins. Meanwhile, Serena Clark is averaging 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and comes off a 10-point, 16-rebound double-double on Thursday night.
Â
ETSU holds an 11-5 advantage in the all-time series and won the last meeting 65-60 at UNF Arena on Feb. 25. However, in each of the last three meetings, an Osprey has recorded 20 points – Jadhken Kerr (25 points, Feb. 11, 2012), Ki Conner (23 points, Jan. 26, 2013) and Smith (20 points, Feb.25, 2013).
