MILTON, Ga. – The No. 18 North Florida men's golf team is one of the 30 teams in the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship which begins play Tuesday, May 28, at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course.
The Ospreys, who are the No. 14 seed after claiming the team title at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on May 16-18, are making their second consecutive appearance and third trip in the last four seasons to the NCAA Championship event. This marks UNF's fourth NCAA Championship appearance as a Division I program with the team's best finish coming last year in a tie for 12th.
North Florida will play the first two rounds alongside No. 13-seed Florida State and No. 15 Illinois. The Ospreys begin play in Tuesday's afternoon wave at 2 p.m. off tee No. 10. UNF, FSU and the Illini will start at 8:40 a.m. from tee No. 1 on Wednesday.
UNF enters the NCAA Championship on a bit of a hot streak having claimed tournament titles in each of their last two events – the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship and the Tallahassee Regional. The Ospreys boasted top three team finishes in six of seven tournaments during the spring season.
Senior Sean Dale ranks 6th in the nation and leads the Ospreys with a 70.70 stroke average. Sophomore MJ Maguire, the A-Sun medalist, is ranked 20th (71.24 avg.), while senior Kevin Phelan is listed 34th (72.10 avg.) giving UNF three of the nation's top collegiate golfers. Sophomore Joey Petronio and redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock will round out the Osprey lineup at the NCAA Championship.
The 75th edition of the national championship takes place over six days, beginning May 28 when the 30 teams battle in 54 holes of stroke play, 18 holes each day over three days, followed by three days of match play competition culminating in the national championship match Sunday, June 2.
The field for the NCAA championship was filled by the top five teams advancing from each of six regional tournaments taking place around the country last weekend. The 30 teams in the field have combined for 30 national team titles in the 75-year history of the championship.
The format for stroke play is each team fields five players, with the low four scores each day counting toward the team score. After 54 holes on Thursday, May 30, the individual national champion will be crowned, and the top eight schools in terms of team score are seeded for match play competition beginning Thursday, May 31.
In team match play, each of the five players on a team plays a match against a counterpart on the opposing team. Each individual match is worth a point for his team, and the team with the most points after the five matches are completed advances to the next round. Quarterfinal matches are set for Friday, May 31, with semifinals on Saturday, June 1, and the championship match Sunday, June 2.
Live scoring will be available each day (here), and UNF fans can also keep up with the Ospreys progress on Twitter (@OspreyMGolf).
The NCAA.com will offer live web streaming of the championship beginning on the final day of stroke play Thursday, May 30, and during each day of match play.
