Men's Golf Tied for 9th at NCAA Championship

MILTON, Ga. – The No. 14-seed University of North Florida men's golf team posted a one-over-par 281 in opening round play of the 2013 NCAA Championship at Capital City Club – Crabapple Course.
The Ospreys finished day one play tied for 9th in the 30-team field. UNF's score marked the best single round total in program history in four appearances at the NCAA Championship.
Redshirt-freshman Taylor Hancock leads the way for UNF ranking tied for 20th after firing a career-best 69 (-1). Senior Sean Dale and sophomore MJ Maguire carded rounds of even-par 70 to sit in a tie for 33rd after 18 holes.
Sophomore Joey Petronio, who is tied for 66th after shooting a 72 (+2), made a late charge making birdie on three of the final five holes of play. Senior Kevin Phelan rounded out the Osprey lineup with a 75 (+5).
Arizona State leads the team competition following an opening round 270 (-10). The Aztecs vaulted into the lead on the strength of Jon Rahm's nine-under 61. Tournament host Georgia Tech is in second at 274 with Alabama (275), Illinois (276), California (277), Oklahoma (278), Texas (279), Oklahoma (279), UNF and Washington (281) filling out the Top 10 teams.
Tournament action continues with second round play Wednesday on the par 70, 7,013-yard layout at Capital City Club. The Ospreys begin play at 8:40 a.m. off of tee No. 1 alongside Florida State and Illinois.
The top eight teams following 54 holes of stroke play advance to the seeded match play portion of the NCAA Championship.
