JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida earned their first win over a ranked team this season on Tuesday afternoon, downing No. 61 College of Charleston at UNF Tennis Complex, 5-2.
The Ospreys were powered to a win with the help of a drama-filled doubles point. After the Cougars earned a win at No. 3, UNF was forced to battle from behind in the other two matches.
Seniors Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre forced Irene Viana and Katherine Schofield to a tiebreaker at No. 1, but fell behind 4-2 and 6-4 at various points in the tiebreak. Facing a pair of match points, the seniors ran off four straight points to take the match, 9-8 (8-6).
Junior Simona Weymar and sophomore Rebeca Pereira then clinched the doubles point at No. 2 in another tiebreaker, downing Christin Newman and Brooke McAmis, 9-8 (7-5). The duo is now 3-0 at No. 2 doubles.
"Today was a very solid, decisive win over a ranked team that we have struggled against in the past," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "The doubles point was extremely important in this match and winning tiebreakers at both No. 1 and No. 2 was huge for our momentum heading into singles play."
Weymar doubles the Ospreys' lead quickly, winning in straight sets at No. 2 singles over Samantha Maddox, 6-2, 6-2. The junior has now won six of her last seven matches, all in straight sets, and has won each of her last four. Sophomore Marina Cunningham then made the match 3-0 in favor of UNF with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Olivia McMillan.
Aviles sealed the match shortly thereafter with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Newman. The win raises her singles record to 7-2 on the year, playing solely at the top singles position.
The Cougars then got a win at No. 3 to make the score 4-1 before sophomore Taylor Hollander earned the Ospreys' fifth point of the day with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Schofield at No. 4. Hollander's singles winning streak now stands at six matches, the longest on the team.
"I am very impressed with the business-like attitude that the girls had today. We stayed positive and brought energy on every court and the results followed," Cohen said. "It's great to see different players in this program step up as the season progresses. We're getting better from top to bottom with every match."
With the win, UNF improves to 6-3 on the year, including a 5-2 mark on its home courts. The Cougars stand at 4-4 following the loss.
The Ospreys will be back in action on March 11, when they return to UNF Tennis Complex for a 2 p.m. match against Cleveland State, their final non-conference opponent of the regular season.
