GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 14 North Florida men's golf team finished second Sunday at the Furman Intercollegiate marking the team's fourth consecutive top three showing this spring.
The Ospreys posted a two-under 862 total, including a final round 292, over the three-day competition held at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course. Sophomore MJ Maguire led the way for UNF finishing tied for fourth at three-under 213 with a last day 73.
Maguire was joined among the Top 10 individuals by senior teammate Kevin Phelan, who shot a one-under 71 on Sunday en route to a three-day 214 (-2).
Senior Sean Dale also finished the event strong for the Ospreys earning a tie for 15th with an even-par 216. Freshman Austin Padova tied for 33rd (222) and redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock tied for 49th (226) to round out the UNF lineup. Playing as an individual, junior Taylor Johnson finished in a tie for 76th at 231.
“It was a bit of a rough day for us,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “Hats off to Virginia Tech for playing great and they deserved to win the tournament. The weather made for some very long days and we didn't play our best this weekend. However, this was a great experience and challenge for our team that we can hopefully learn from and get better. We now get a few weeks off to refocus on school work and recharge for the final events of the regular season.”
Virginia Tech led wire-to-wire in claiming the team championship of the 21-team field with a 54-hole total of 843. After the Ospreys in second, Troy finished third at 873 with Samford (877) and Iowa State (879) rounding out the top five squads. Samford's Drew Aimone and Iowa State's Scott Fernandez shared the medalist crown with 209 (-7) totals.
North Florida next competes Apr. 8-9 at the Gary Koch Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
