JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team started its Atlantic Sun Conference play in style on Thursday afternoon, as it shut out Kennesaw State, 7-0, at UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys opened the day with their second consecutive sweep in doubles matches. Sophomores Taylor Hollander and Marina Cunningham struck first with a thorough win at No. 3, downing Therese Lagerkvist and Isabela Castro, 8-1. Junior Simona Weymar and sophomore Rebeca Pereira then clinched the point for UNF with their fifth consecutive win, an 8-5 victory at No. 2.
With the doubles point already in hand, seniors Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre battled back for an 8-7 (7-2) win at No. 1 to give UNF the doubles sweep. The three wins marked the second consecutive contest in which the Ospreys have swept the doubles matches.
Aguirre carried her momentum into singles as she notched the Ospreys' first shutout of the season, downing Tamara Plocher, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Freshman Mariella Calderon then followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 to put the Ospreys up 3-0. The win marked Calderon's first collegiate dual match victory.
Cunnigham notched the match-clinching point for the Ospreys at No. 4 with her fourth consecutive win, taking down Lagerkvist with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to give UNF a 4-0 lead. Just minutes later, Hollander made the deficit five with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3. The sophomore has now won seven of her last eight matches for UNF.
With the match already in hand, Aviles fought off Virginie Stein, the defending A-Sun Freshman of the Year, in a straight-set, 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 1 to push her winning streak to four matches. Weymar then completed the sweep for the Ospreys with a hard-fought win at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over Alexandra Apostu.
Weymar's win was her sixth singles win in a row, the longest active streak on the team and tied for the longest recorded by an Osprey this season.
“Kennesaw State is a solid team and to come out with a 7-0 win is definitely a confidence-building start to our conference season,” Head Coach Audra Cohen said. “We have worked very hard on finding the right doubles combinations and it has really paid off. We're anchored at all three spots now.”
The victory, UNF's 12th in a row in A-Sun play, raised the Ospreys' record in 2013 to 8-3 (1-0 A-Sun), including a 7-2 mark at home. Kennesaw State fell to 4-7 (0-1) with the loss.
UNF will be back in action on Saturday, March 16, when the Ospreys face Mercer in another home match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Admission is free to the public.
