JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team opens play in the Atlantic Sun Conference this weekend, as it plays host to Kennesaw State and Mercer in a pair of 10 a.m. matches on Thursday, March 14 and Saturday, March 16, respectively.
In their last match, the Ospreys took down Cleveland State in a tough, 4-3 decison at UNF Tennis Complex. It marked UNF's third consecutive victory and helped propel the Ospreys into this week's ITA National Team Rankings, where they reside at No. 74.
Kennesaw State, who the Ospreys face at 10 a.m. on Thursday, enters the weekend with a 4-6 record this season, though the Owls have a 3-4 record in true road matches. In their last outing, the Owls broke a two-match losing streak with a 4-3 win at South Carolina State.
Sophomore Virginie Stein leads the way for KSU, having played all 10 matches at the No. 1 position and compiling a 5-5 record on the year. Stein enters Thursday's contest having won both of her last two matches. In last year's match, the Ospreys grabbed a 6-1 win over the Owls on KSU's home courts.
Mercer, UNF's opponent at 10 a.m. on Saturday, has lost its last two matches to fall to 4-7 on the year, though the Bears are 3-5 on the road. On Wednesday afternoon, Mercer dropped a 5-2 decision at home to Chattanooga.
Last season, UNF traveled to Macon, Ga. and blanked the Bears, 7-0.
Junior Simona Weymar will to continue her run of good play for the Ospreys this weekend, as she enters conference play having won five consecutive singles matches, all at the No. 2 position, to raise her dual match record to 8-2 this year. Weymar has also paired with sophomore Rebeca Pereira at No. 2 doubles for the last four matches, winning all four contests.
Senior Lorena Aviles and sophomore Marina Cunningham have three-match winning streaks of their own, as Aviles has compiled an 8-2 record solely at the No. 1 position, while Cunnigham now sits at 7-3 while playing at four different positions for UNF.
Admission to both matches this weekend is free to the public.
