FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament Central
BOCA RATON, Fla. – University of North Florida softball returns to the road for its final out-of-town early season tournament at this weekend's three-day FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament held at the FAU Softball Stadium.
The Ospreys have emerged on the winning side in each of their previous early season tournaments, going 3-1 at the Panhandle Invitational two weeks ago and then 3-2 at last weekend's Troy Subway Invitational.
UNF comes off a 3-2 eight-inning win over Oakland on Wednesday at the UNF Softball Complex. Ashley Holton had a two-run homer in the third inning and then scored the winning run off an error by the Golden Grizzlies.
Northern Illinois was last in action two weeks ago at the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas, where the Huskies went 3-2. The Huskies defeated Illinois State and the twice beat Sam Houston State to start the 2013 campaign. As a result of their play at the tournament, Jennifer Barnett and Jessica Strum swept the Mid-America Conference weekly honors on Feb. 12. Barnett and Shelby Miller each have a team-best five hits. Strum enters the weekend with a 0.00 ERA in 16.2 innings with nine strikeouts and a 1-1 record.
UNF holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series with the Huskies. For the second straight-season, UNF and Northern Illinois meet on at a neutral site. Last year, the two teams meet in Clearwater, Fla., at the USF Tournament. UNF prevailed with a 4-1 win on Mar. 17, 2012 in a game that saw the Ospreys tie the team single-game record for hit by a pitch (5) and Mariah Reynolds tie the individual single-game mark for hit by a pitch (2).
Providence begins its 2013 season this weekend and the first 17 games on the Friars' 2013 schedule all take place in Florida. The Friars return nine starters from last year's team that went 17-36, including it top hitter from a year ago in Jessie Bryant.
The Ospreys lead the all-time series with Providence 1-0. UNF defeated the Friars 4-0 on Feb. 13, 2010 at the Combat Classic in Miami, Fla.
This is Towson's last early season tournament. After a 4-0 start to the season, the Tigers attempt to bounce back from six-straight losses. Last weekend, Towson was 0- 5 at the College of Charleston Classic. Delanie Dunham is batting .407 through 10 games, going 11-for-27 with seven RBI.
UNF and Towson also met in Clearwater, Fla., at last year's USF Tournament. The Ospreys are 1-0 all-time against Towson after posted a 2-1 win on Mar. 16, 2012. Danica Mandarano scored the eventual game-winner in the fourth inning last year.
FAU hosts four home tournaments, including three consecutively. This weekend's tournament is the second of three-straight home tournaments and is in the middle of a 24-game homestand. The Owls went 1-4 at the USF-Wilson DeMarini Opening Day Tournament in Tampa two weeks ago, and then 2-2 at the last weekend's FAU Kick-Off Classic. Christina Martinez is hitting a team-best .308 (8-for-26) through nine games.
The Owls hold a 3-0 advantage over UNF and all three games have taken place in Boca Raton. The two teams have not met since Feb. 8, 2008 when FAU defeated UNF 7-0 at the FAU Kick-Off Classic.
UConn plays its second of three-straight early season tournaments that take place in Florida this weekend. The Huskies went 2-2 during their season opening tournament at FIU. Head coach Karen Mullins has over 800 wins in her career. Maddy Schiappa leads the team from the plate with a .583 batting average, going 7-for-12 last weekend. In the circle, Alyson Ambler and Katelyn Callahan both have 2.47 ERAs.
This is the first meeting between UNF and UConn in program history.
