
Softball Splits on Day One at FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. – University of North Florida softball split its games during the first day of the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Friday at the FAU Softball Stadium. The Ospreys fell 4-2 in eight innings against Northern Illinois to start the day, but bounced back in their second game with a 2-1 win over Providence.
Northern Illinois jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with Erika Oswald scoring on an Osprey error.
UNF responded in the bottom half of the inning as Lauren Pollack sent a one-out double to right field that drove in Danica Mandarano to tie it up at 1-1.
However, the tie was short-lived as Northern Illinois regained a one-run lead in the top of the fourth. Jennifer Barnett's single to left field brought home Nicole Gremillion from second and the Huskies took a 2-1 lead.
After one-and-a-half scoreless innings, UNF forced another tie. With the bases loaded, Megan David had the game-tying run as Mandarano walked and the two teams were deadlocked a 2-2.
A scoreless seventh inning resulted in extra innings. It was UNF's second-straight game that to go into eight innings. Northern Illinois broke the tie in the top of the eighth. A Gremillion hit allowed Delani Vest to score the go-ahead and put the Huskies up 3-2. Then Gremillion got the inning's second run as Bryanna Phelan drew a bases loaded walk.
Jessica Sturm got the win after pitching all 8.0 innings for the Huskies. Sturm allowed two runs off nine hits and struck out three.
Kaylie Wallace was credited with the loss. In 8.0 innings, Wallace struck out four and allowed one earned run off six hits.
Mariah Reynolds was 3-for-3 from the plate for UNF.
Gremillion was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs.
In the day's second game, Providence struck first in the bottom of the second. With a runner at second, Stephanie Kiesel sent a one-out single to right field that drove in Juliana Thibodeau to make it 1-0.
UNF quickly erased the deficit when Mariah Reynolds sent a one-out solo home run in the top of the third to tie it up a 1-1.
The Ospreys got the final run they needed for the win in the fifth inning. Jackie Reese sent a deep sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Brittany Hendrix for the eventual game-winner.
Kayla Goff was credited with the win. In 7.0 innings, Goff fanned a career-high nine batters and gave up one run on seven hits.
Kiara Amos had the loss for Providence after allowing two runs off 10 hits in 7.0 innings. Amos also struck out two.
Reynolds was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Marissa Thomas went 3-for-4.
Kristie Dederick was 3-for-3 from the plate for Providence.
UNF continues play at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Saturday. The Ospreys face Towson at 11 a.m., and then host FAU at 6 p.m., at the FAU Softball Stadium.
