JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Senior Lorena Aviles fought back from a lost first set to earn a hard-fought, three-set victory at No. 1 singles to lead the University of North Florida women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Houston on Friday afternoon.
After dropping the opening set to Elana Kordolaimi, 6-3, Aviles cruised to a 6-2 victory in the second set, before winning the third set at love en route to her match-clinching win.
“Pulling out a win in a 4-3 match is always a good feeling,” Head Coach Audra Cohen said. “We were the fitter team today and it really paid off in the end.”
The Ospreys came back from multiple deficits over the course of the match after dropping the doubles point to fall behind, 1-0. Aviles and senior Melanie Aguirre, playing at No. 1, were the lone UNF pair to grab a victory, taking down Rocio Martin Fernand and Charlotte Phillips, 8-5.
Junior Simona Weymar quickly leveled the score, earning a thorough win at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2. After the Cougars grabbed a victory at No. 5, sophomore Rebeca Pereira tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Shortly after, a Houston victory at No. 6 made the score 3-2 and made both remaining matches must-wins for the Ospreys.
After sophomore Marina Cunningham battled her way to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3, the stage was set for Aviles to clinch the match for the Ospreys.
The senior's win at No. 1 raised her record to 3-1 on the year, one of four Ospreys to achieve that mark, along with Weymar, Pereira and Cunningham.
“We are fortunate to have these kinds of tight matches early in the season, so we can fix any weaknesses we have,” Cohen said. “Some of those got exploited today and now we have time to work on them and improve so that these kinds of matches are easier for us.”
The Ospreys are back in action on Sunday morning when they host Barry in a 10 a.m. match. Admission for the match is free.
