JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball returns to its home court for the first time in two-and-a-half weeks on Friday when the Ospreys host Tennessee State at 7 p.m., during Middle School Night at UNF Arena.
Â
"We are looking forward to playing at home," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Tennessee State will be a good challenge for us. We will have to be disciplined on defense and control the glass. We are excited to play in front of our fans again."
Â
UNF has not been at home since its 62-44 win over Samford on Nov. 18. Home court has played to UNF's advantage as both of the Ospreys' wins this season have been at UNF Arena.
Â
The Ospreys attempt to end a three-game losing skid and bounce back from its most recent setback. Last Sunday, UNF fell 48-44 at Clemson. The Tigers' 48 points were the fewest allowed by a high major team in Osprey history. Destinee Smith tallied 10 points in order to extend her double-digit scoring streak to seven games, while Paulina Zaveckaite grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds. Zaveckaite was the only player with double-digit boards in the game.
Â
Tennessee State will also look to end a losing streak of its own, having dropped its last five. Atlantic Sun teams are no stranger to the Tigers' schedule as Tennessee State has already played at Kennesaw State and Jacksonville as well as hosted Lipscomb. Chelsea Hudson averages a team-best 17.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Hudson led the Tigers in scoring against both Kennesaw State (36 points) and Jacksonville (18 points). Rachel Allen adds a 10.8 point-per-game average and had a team-best 20 points against Lipscomb.
Â
Friday night's game will be UNF fourth new opponent in five contests. The Ospreys have never faced Tennessee State in program history. A total of six new teams appear on this season's schedule, including Samford, Siena, Clemson, Tennessee State, Air Force and Georgia Southern.
Â
As part of the Middle School Night promotion with Friday's game, admission is free for all middle school teams. Tickets for parents are $3. On Saturday, UNF will host a free clinic from 9-11 a.m., at UNF Arena for all middle school teams. Contact Alicia Ramsdell (alicia.ramsdell@unf.edu) for registration for Saturday's clinic.
