JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball suffered a 67-51 setback to Tennessee State on Friday night at UNF Arena.
"I'm really disappointed in our lack of intensity and focus," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Tennessee State outworked us in our own house."
Tennessee State out-shot and out-rebounded the Ospreys. The Tigers shot 39.1 percent (25-for-64) from the floor and grabbed 44 boards. UNF was 32.1 percent (17-for-53) from the floor and pulled down 37 rebounds.
Amber Robinson led a trio of Ospreys in double-digit points, tallying a career-high 11 points. Destinee Smith and Ki Conner each had 10. Paulina Zaveckaite led UNF with six rebounds.
Chelsea Hudson notched 24 points, while Rachel Allen added in 16 points and five assists. Imani Davis had a game-best 10 rebounds and also collected four steals.
Tennessee State led from start to finish. After a jumper from Robinson made it a one-point game, a jumper from Allen sparked a 10-0 run that allowed the Tigers to go up 20-9 at 10:53. UNF answered with a six-point spurt and made it a 20-15 game on a Larkira Jones layup at 8:41. However, Tennessee State pushed its lead to 13 twice in the first half before taking a 35-24 lead into halftime.
UNF trailed by as many as 15 early in the second half when Tennessee State went up 45-30 on a Hudson layup at 14:23. The Ospreys fought back using a 14-3 run to close to within four points. Robinson and Bailey Florin accounted for 12 of UNF's 14 points during the surge with Robinson's jumper at 9:23 making it a 48-44 game.
However, a five-minute field goal drought was costly for UNF as Tennessee State used an 8-2 run to go up 56-46 with 4:36 remaining. Two Conner free throws at 4:56 were the Ospreys' only points during that stretch. A trey from Florin at 4:24 broke the field goal streak to bring the Ospreys to within seven, but that was as close as they could get with the Tigers outscoring UNF 11-2 over the final 3:58.
After having next week off from competition due to exams, UNF returns to action for its final nonconference road game of the season. The Ospreys make the trek across I-10 to Florida State on Monday, Dec. 16 for a 7 p.m., game at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The game will air on ESPN3.
