#MSOC Travels North to Continue @AtlanticSun Play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team continues Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend with a pair of road matches. The Ospreys start the weekend on Friday night with a match at Northern Kentucky at 7:00 p.m. at the NKU Soccer Complex in Highland Heights, Ky. UNF continues the weekend with a match against Lipscomb on Sunday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex at 3:00 p.m. (ET) in Nashville, Tenn.

North Florida enters the weekend with a 4-3-1 overall record and a 0-1-0 mark in the Atlantic Sun. Northern Kentucky is 4-3-4 overall and 1-1-0 in the A-Sun, while Lipscomb is 5-5-1 with a 1-1-0 conference mark.

The Ospreys dropped a defensive battle in the conference opener, falling to East Tennessee State, 1-0, at Patton Park on Friday, Oct. 4. The Norse opened conference play with a 2-1 overtime victory over Stetson before falling 1-0 to Florida Gulf Coast. The Bisons started conference play with a 1-0 loss to FGCU before pulling even in the standings with a 1-0 victory over the Hatters.

Northern Kentucky holds a 1-0 series advantage with North Florida after the first meeting between the two teams last season. The Norse were able to pull off a 2-1 victory over the Ospreys last season in Jacksonville. In the 22nd minute, NKU's Nick Toney headed the ball into the middle of the box where Ian O'Reilly was waiting to put the ball in the back of the net. UNF's Teddy Mulamba tied the match in the 78th minute, as Mulamba beat the defender one-on-one and hit a tight angled shot from the front right post and put it in the back left corner of the net. The Norse regained the lead in the 86th minute. Kevin Walker sent the ball forward to Craig Heard who was able to beat the Osprey goalie who was charging on the play for an easy tap in goal to go ahead 2-1.

UNF has a slight 4-3-1 advantage over the Bisons in the all-time series. The Ospreys are 2-2-0 in Jacksonville and 2-1-1 in Nashville against LU. North Florida won the first three meetings of the series before dropping a match. The following season, the Ospreys and Bisons played to a 2-2 double overtime draw. Lipscomb won the next two meetings to tie the all-time series.

Last season, North Florida broke the series tie with a 3-2 double overtime victory over Lipscomb. The win was the first overtime victory for head coach Derek Marinatos and was also the first Atlantic Sun Conference win for Marinatos.

Lipscomb started the scoring with a goal in the third minute, as the Bisons' Jeremy Reid bounced a pass to Reece Holcombe who took the hip-high volley from 18 yards into the top of the net. North Florida evened the score in the 53rd minute as Josh Damm took a shot that was cleared off line in traffic. Drew Bruce picked up the loose ball, finishing from six yards out. The Ospreys took their first lead of the match with a goal in the 64th minute as Camilo Garcia scored to break the tie and put UNF in front 2-1. The Ospreys stumbled defensively allowing the Bisons to score the equalizer less than a minute later. Regulation ended with the team knotted at 2-2. In overtime, both teams took two shots with the Ospreys registering a shot on goal. The shot on goal was saved by the Bisons, forcing a second overtime. In the second overtime, the Osprey defense continued to excel. Lipscomb took four shots, including three shots on goal, but Brad Sienkiewicz was able to thwart the Bisons attacks. North Florida needed just one shot in the second overtime to claim the match. Garcia sent a through ball to the top of the box and Mauricio Valderruten netted the golden goal to give the Ospreys the victory.

Scouting the Opposition:
Northern Kentucky: NKU is coming off of a split over this past weekend. The Norse defeated Stetson 2-1 in overtime on Friday Oct. 4 and then they lost to FGCU, 1-0 on Sunday. FGCU was picked the win the Atlantic Sun this season and an early penalty kick was all that separated the two sides. The match will be a "Blackout Cancer" match. Black balloons will be sold to benefit the American Cancer Society and they will be released at halftime. There will also be an NKU jersey raffle to benefit the ACS. $1 from each admission fee will be donated to the ACS.

Lipscomb: The Bisons open up a three-match home stand on Friday night as they host Jacksonville in a match. Lipscomb and North Florida will play on Sunday afternoon. With time dwindling and his team needing a goal, Kevin McMahon beat the Hatters' back line defense on a pass by Zach Tarbox to score and put Lipscomb on top 1-0 at the 82:55 mark in the Bisons' last match. The goal was McMahon's first of the year.
