JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time in nearly three weeks, the University of North Florida women's basketball team returns to the road and faces ETSU at the MSHA Center on Saturday afternoon.
“The road had been tough for us this year and tomorrow's game will be another challenge,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “ETSU is a solid defensive team that has height at all five spots on the floor. We'll need to be on top of our defensive game plan, but we must execute on offense.”
The Ospreys were last on the road on Jan. 7 at Florida Gulf Coast and still remain searching for their first away game victory of the 2012-13 season. UNF enters Saturday with a 1-8 record away from UNF Arena with the Ospreys' lone win being a neutral-site victory against Coastal Carolina on Dec. 19 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
UNF went 2-1 during its three-game homestand over the last two weeks and comes off a thrilling 66-63 win over cross-town rival Jacksonville in last Saturday's SunTrust River City Rumble. A trio of Ospreys – Jadhken Kerr, Chandler Merkerson and Destinee Smith – scored 10-or-more points in the win over the Dolphins. UNF is 7-0 on the season when multiple plays have 10-or-more points.
The Atlantic Sun's leader in blocks (4.4 bpg) and rebounds (41.9 rpg), ETSU opens a four-game homestand with Saturday's game. However, the Bucs have not won on its home floor since 83-75 win over Memphis on Nov. 30. ETSU comes off a road loss to Mercer on Monday, suffering a 79-64 setback. Destiny Mitchell leads ETSU in points and rebounds, averaging 12.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Mitchell's 8.9 rpg ranks second in the A-Sun and her .493 field goal percentage is fourth in the conference.
ETSU holds a 10-4 advantage in the all-time series and is 6-1 against UNF on its home floor. However, last year, the Ospreys swept the series for the first time ever, rallying for a 70-67 win at UNF Arena on Jan. 12 and then took a 74-69 overtime win in Johnson City on Feb. 11. In last year's game in Johnson City, Kerr went off for a school-record seven three-pointers en route to scoring a career-best 25 points.
Tip-off for Saturday's game is set for 1:30 p.m., and is the first game of a doubleheader with both school's men's teams.
