Men’s Soccer Begins Road Swing at Georgia Southern

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After opening the season with four consecutive home matches, the University of North Florida men's soccer team hits the road for six of the next seven matches, including for road contests in a row. The road swing begins with a match at Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Eagle Soccer Field at Erk Russell Athletic Park.
North Florida enters the match 2-2-0 overall, while Georgia Southern is 2-1-0. This road match will be the first of the season for the Ospreys, while the match will mark the first home contest of the year for the Eagles.
UNF opened the season with a 4-2 victory over Siena, but fell to Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament Champions Georgia State, 3-1, to take second place in the tournament. After dropping a 2-1 decision to FIU, the Ospreys rebounded with a 1-0 shutout victory over Florida Atlantic.
GSU enters the match on a two-match winning streak. After opening the season with a 2-1 loss at No. 21 UAB, the Eagles earned neutral-site victories over Winthrop (W, 3-2) and Gardner-Webb (W, 2-0).
Georgia Southern holds a 5-3-1 advantage in the all-time series with North Florida. Since turning Division I in 2005, the Ospreys are 2-4-1 against the Eagles, but are 1-1-1 in Statesboro, Ga. UNF has dropped the last three meetings between the two schools – all in Jacksonville. The last time the two teams met in Statesboro, the Ospreys posted a 1-0 shutout victory.
Former Osprey Steven Lowenthal (2008-09) scored the lone goal in the victory over the Eagles, while Tony Restino (2008) notched four saves for the shutout victory.
In the early goings of the season, the Ospreys have already eclipsed their win total and goals scored total from the previous season. Six different players have scored at least one goal, while four different players have chipped in an assist.
Jean Rivaroli leads the team with five points, netting a pair of goals and adding a helper. In addition, Casey Caronis, Camilo Garcia, Teddy Mulamba, Alex Morrell and Mauricio Valderruten have all scored goals on the young season. Morrell, Jake Frahm and Max McDaniel have chipped in an assist apiece.
At goal, Brad Sienkiewicz has seen the majority of minutes between the posts. The transfer has played in and started all four matches of the year. He has notched 22 saves – 5.5 saves per match. Kyle Nasta earned the victory against Florida Atlantic, combining with Sienkiewicz for the shutout. In his first outing of the year, Nasta recorded five saves against the Owls to preserve the shutout and earn the victory.
Following the match with Georgia Southern, North Florida continues the road trip, playing a pair of matches in Riverside, Calif., against UC Riverside and San Diego State. The Ospreys then play on the road at Furman before hosting UCF. Following the match with the Knights, UNF opens up Atlantic Sun Conference play at East Tennessee State and USC Upstate.
