JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After four consecutive road matches, the University of North Florida men's soccer team returns home to Hodges Stadium for the final nonconference match of the season against in-state foe UCF. The match is slated for 7:00 p.m. and will be aired on ASun.TV. Live stats for the match will also be available.
North Florida enters the match 3-5-0 overall, but owns a 2-2-0 mark at home. The Ospreys last home match was a 1-0 shutout victory over Florida Atlantic on Sept. 2. UNF also opened the season with a 4-2 win against Siena (8/24) at Hodges Stadium. North Florida is 1-3-0 in its last four matches that were all on the road, including a pair of losses to nationally ranked opponents.
UCF takes the field with a 2-3-2 overall record. Like the Ospreys, the Knights have dropped two matches this season to ranked opponents. UCF has faced two Atlantic Sun Conference teams, playing both Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast to 2-2 draws.
The Knights hold a decisive advantage in the series between the two schools, leading the series 6-1-0. The Ospreys were able to upend the Knights with a 3-2 victory at Hodges Stadium on Oct. 30, 2007.
In the match, UNF men's soccer was forced to battle back from a pair of second-half deficits. In overtime, the Ospreys didn't allow enough time for a repeat. North Florida needed just 27 seconds into the extra period to end the game and send the sizable "Senior Night" crowd home happy with a 3-2 win over the Knights. Shareef Rajkumar dribbled through traffic and found an open Akil DeFreitas waiting, who delivered a strike to the right corner to end the game.
The match with the Knights will be the first home match against UCF since the 2007 victory. The Ospreys have played four consecutive road contests against UCF.
The Ospreys depth has shown in the early goings of the season with 18 different players earning multiple starts on the year. Seven different UNF players have scored goals this season with four players recording two goals apiece. In addition, seven different players have combined for North Florida's eight assists in the first five matches. Two different goalkeepers have both recorded victories on the season and the duo combined for a shutout.
Max McDaniel and Jean Rivaroli lead the Ospreys with five points apiece. The duo has each scored a pair of goals on the year, while adding a helper apiece. Camilo Garcia and Mauricio Valderruten have both scored a pair of goals each for four points, while Alex Morrell has chipped in a goal and a team-best two assists for four points.
At goal, Brad Sienkiewicz and Kyle Nasta have combined for three wins, including a shutout victory. Sienkiewicz earned the first four starts of the season, but was sidelined because of an injury against Florida Atlantic, allowing Nasta to earn his first collegiate start at Georgia Southern. Sienkiewicz has allowed just eight goals, while making 25 stops. In five appearances, Nasta has blocked 39 shots, including a personal-best 11 saves versus San Diego State. Nasta currently leads the nation in saves per match with 7.80.
Scouting the Opposition:
UCF has played a tough schedule this season. Four of its seven matches have been on the road, including a pair across the country in California. The Knights have also played two top-15 ranked teams, including No. 12 Charlotte, who escaped Orlando with a 2-1 double-overtime victory Wednesday. The 49ers finished as the national runner-up a year ago.
Deshorn Brown scored versus Charlotte and has tallied a goal in four-straight games. The forward paces UCF with six goals and 14 points. When the Knights face the Ospreys Saturday, the match will allow A.J. Nelson to play in front of friends and family. The senior midfielder hails from Ponte Vedra Beach.
