JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida travels to Greenville, S.C. for a nonconference match against Furman at 4:00 p.m. at the Stone Soccer Stadium. The Ospreys look to rebound after a pair of losses in the UC Riverside/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Invitational.
Despite the losses, North Florida had a pair of players named to the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Casey Caronis and freshman Kyle Nasta were both named to the UCR/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Invitational All-Tournament Team. Caronis earned starts in the Ospreys' matches against No. 25 UC Riverside and San Diego State, playing a majority of each match. Nasta saw time in both matches at goal, recording 19 saves on the weekend. The true freshman keeper posted a personal-best 11 saves in the match. Eleven saves in match is the second most in North Florida history behind Andrew Calise (2007-10) who recorded 12 saves at Mercer on Oct. 4, 2007.
The Ospreys enters the match 3-4 overall on the season. Before last weekend, UNF had won back-to-back matches for the first time since October of 2009. This season the Ospreys have already tripled their win total from last season and nearly doubled their goals scored.
The Ospreys depth has shown in the early goings of the season with 18 different players earning multiple starts on the year. Seven different UNF players have scored goals this season with four players recording two goals apiece. In addition, seven different players have combined for North Florida's eight assists in the first five matches. Two different goalkeepers have both recorded victories on the season and the duo combined for a shutout.
Max McDaniel and Jean Rivaroli lead the Ospreys with five points apiece. The duo has each scored a pair of goals on the year, while adding a helper apiece. Camilo Garcia and Mauricio Valderruten have both scored a pair of goals each for four points, while Alex Morrell has chipped in a goal and a team-best two assists for four points.
At goal, Brad Sienkiewicz and Nasta have combined for three wins, including a shutout victory. Sienkiewicz has seen the majority of minutes between the posts, earning five starts, but was sidelined because of an injury against Florida Atlantic, allowing Nasta to earn his first collegiate start at Georgia Southern. Sienkiewicz has allowed just eight goals, while making 25 stops. In four appearances, Nasta has blocked 34 shots, including a personal-best 11 saves versus San Diego State.
Head coach Derek Marinatos was the top assistant for the Paladins for four seasons (2006-10) before taking over the reins at North Florida last season. The match will be the first for Marinatos against his former team.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Paladins are ranked 21st in this week's Soccer Times Top 25 and 23rd in the College Soccer News Top 30 Poll and Soccer America Top 25 after scoring a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten FIU on Friday evening at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Furman's contest versus host Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon was suspended just moments into the second half due to lightning and heavy rains.
