ATHENS, Ga. – For the second time in the last three seasons the No. 10/12 ranked North Florida golf team will play at the NCAA Golf Championships after finishing third Saturday at the NCAA Athens Regional held at the UGA Golf Course.
UNF, the No. 2 seed in Athens, finished with a tournament total 858 (+6) following a final round 296 (+12). The total marked the lowest 54-hole total in program history for postseason play. The team's third place finish was the best in NCAA play since a runner-up showing at the 2000 East Regional.
Junior All-American candidate Sean Dale, the Atlantic Sun Conference Golfer of the Year, paced the Ospreys on the last day firing a final round one-under-par 70. Dale finished tied for eighth at 212 (-1), and was joined in the Top 10 by senior teammate Kevin Aylwin, who tied for fourth at 210 (-3) including a final round 74 (+3).
“We didn't have our best today but I'm proud of the way we battled through and accomplished our goal of reaching Nationals,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “Sean (Dale) did what a great player does and he carried us on a tough day. At Regionals, it doesn't matter if you finish first or fifth as long as you are in the top five and get to move on. We are really excited and looking forward to playing in the NCAA Championship.”
UNF freshman MJ Maguire finished with a 78 on Saturday to tie for 26th at 218. Junior Kevin Phelan tied for 36th at 220 and freshman Joey Petronio tied for 51st at 222 to round out the Osprey lineup.
Top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Alabama dominated the team competition finishing with a 24-under 828 to win by 25 strokes. East Carolina was second at 853 followed by UNF with Georgia (864) and Iowa (866) completing the list of teams advancing to Nationals. New Mexico finished sixth at 867 followed by Augusta State (870), Long Beach State (872), Houston (874), UNC Wilmington (874), Wake Forest (880), UT Arlington (884) and Loyola-Maryland (910).
Crimson Tide linksters claimed all three top spots in the individual medalist competition with Justin Thomas edging teammate Bobby Wyatt by one stroke, 204 to 205. Bama's Cory Whitsett was third at 208 followed by a trio of players including Aylwin.
The Ospreys will be making their third appearance in the NCAA Division I Championships having previously accomplished the feat in 2000 and 2010. UNF participated in the NCAA Division II Championship four times posting a pair of runner-up finishes and also claimed the NAIA National Championship in 1993.
North Florida now turns its attention to the NCAA Championship slated for May 29-June 3 at historic Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The championship round features a 54-hole stroke play competition followed by match play for the top eight squads.
