PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The No. 10/13 ranked University of North Florida golf team starts play in the 2012 NCAA Golf Championship Tuesday at famed Riviera Country Club. The event features 54 holes of medal play with top eight teams advancing to match play.
UNF is making its second Championship appearance in the past three seasons having finished 14th at NCAA Championship in 2010. The Ospreys qualified for the Championship round after finishing third at the Athens Regional on May 17-19.
“We are looking forward to a great week of competition,” said seventh year UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “The weather has been wonderful and the golf course is definitely a real test and challenge. We have a tremendous opportunity of showing just how good a team we are this week.”
UNF enters the NCAA Championship on a bit of a hot streak having won two of their last three tournaments and three of the last five events in which they have played. The Ospreys third-place finish at the Athens Regional marked the program's second best postseason tournament finish.
Representing the Ospreys this week will be senior Kevin Aylwin, juniors Kevin Phelan and Sean Dale along with freshmen Joey Petronio and MJ Maguire.
All five of UNF's golfers garnered postseason recognition from the Atlantic Sun. Dale, Aylwin and Phelan were all named first-team all-conference with Petronio earning second-team accolades. Petronio and Maguire were both picked on the all-freshman squad. Dale was named the A-Sun Golfer of the Year, Petronio was the A-Sun Freshman of the Year and Schroeder collected his third A-Sun Coach of the Year honor.
North Florida begins play in the three-day, 54-hole medal play at 1:30 p.m. (PT) off of tee No. 1. On Tuesday, UNF will be paired with San Diego State and Texas A&M
