Day One Results
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – No. 10/13 ranked University of North Florida golf team opened play at the 2012 NCAA Golf Championship Tuesday with a solid first round score of 290 to rank tied for sixth at historic Riviera Country Club.
The Ospreys are just five shots behind round one leader Alabama and tied with Iowa, Florida State, Texas and UCF after 18 holes of play. Freshman MJ Maguire led the way for UNF posting an even par round 71 that featured a pair of eagles on holes 1 and 17 and has him tied for 13th.
As a team, UNF got started quickly jumping to seven-under-par after the opening hole with Osprey linksters carding two eagles and three birdies. Maguire and junior Kevin Phelan each boasted threes on the par 5 hole.
Phelan fired a one-over 72 on Tuesday to finish the day tied for 27th with freshman Joey Petronio just one shot behind him with a 73 (T-47th). Senior Kevin Aylwin posted a 74 (T-63rd) while junior Sean Dale rounded out the UNF lineup with a first round 77.
"We had a solid team round today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "The golf course was extremely tough this afternoon. I was very proud and impressed with the play of our freshmen and how they battled and competed all day long. The upper classmen also had solid rounds. We need to get some rest and be ready to go again in the morning."
None of the 30 teams were able to break par on day one. The Crimson Tide lead after carding a 285 (+1) with Florida and Auburn tied for second at 288. UCLA and Oklahoma are tied for fourth at 289 followed by the five team tie that includes UNF in sixth at 290 filling out the list of Top 10 squads.
UCLA's Anton Arboleda grabbed the lead in the individual medalist competition after shooting a four-under-par 67.
Play continues Wednesday on the par 71, 7,292 yard layout of Riviera CC with North Florida returning to the course at 8:10 a.m. (PT) on hole No. 10 along with playing partners San Diego State and Texas A&M. The top eight teams after 54 holes of medal play advance to match-play competition beginning Friday.
