JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball returns to the road for one last non-conference doubleheader when the Ospreys visit Georgia Southern on Wednesday afternoon.
It will be UNF's second trip to Statesboro, Ga., this season. The Ospreys took part in the Eagle Classic Feb. 24-26, going 3-2 at the tournament. Among UNF's wins during that weekend was a 4-1 victory over Georgia Southern on Feb. 26. For the weekend in Statesboro, Lauren Pollack led UNF's offensive efforts, batting .500. Pollack registered six hits, including three doubles and one home run, en route to earning All-Eagle Classic honors. Meanwhile, Kaylie Wallace recorded a 0.89 ERA in 15.2 innings at the Eagle Classic and also earned All-Tournament honors.
UNF will look to improve upon a 3-3 showing last week that saw three extra-inning games. The Ospreys enter Wednesday with a 19-14 non-conference record. In their most recent non-conference date, the Ospreys split with Bethune-Cookman last Wednesday, earning a 3-2 Game One win in nine innings before falling 9-1 in five innings in Game Two.
Since its Mar. 14 doubleheader with Mercer, Georgia Southern has gone 14-4, which includes last weekend's three-game sweep of the College of Charleston. The Eagles are 4-2 against Atlantic Sun teams this season and have won their last four games against A-Sun opponents. Wednesday's doubleheader will be Georgia Southern's last set of home games for 10 days as the Eagles take it to the road at Appalachian State this weekend and Jacksonville next Tuesday. Marie Fogle is hitting a team-best .420 (55-for-131) and leads the Eagles in runs (27), doubles (11) and triples (3). Mackenzie Williams, who had the Eagles' only RBI against UNF on Feb. 26, has a team-best seven home runs and 30 RBI. Meanwhile, Sarah Purvis and Brooke Reid have been strong in the pitching circle, entering this week with 1.57 and 1.59 ERAs, respectively.
UNF leads the all-time series with Georgia Southern 12-6. UNF has won nine of the last 11 games between the two teams. However, last year, it was the Eagles that emerged with two 5-0 wins during a mid-week doubleheader at the UNF Softball Complex on Mar. 23, 2011.
First pitch of Game One is set for 3 p.m., from Eagle Field.
